2014 SHAWANO LAKE FISHERY SATURDAY JUNE 7, 2014 Many residents and fishermen know we are on Shawano Lake this one time each year. We make quite a presence at the park and boat landing in Cecil. And—being there is what it’s all about. Outdoor folks sharing what we want most. Camaraderie and good will. In the past we’ve had various weather conditions. But we’ve never had a bad day. Sure we want to catch fish and we do. Folks sitting around enjoying a good meal and telling stories, mostly about fishing and the big one that got away is always a joy to hear. (By the way—it’s OK to tell tall tales on this day as long as it’s about fishing.) There is a Registration Form on Page 12 that must be completed and returned by May 30th so we can be sure of enough pontoon boats for all to fish. Drive to Cecil, turn right at the lake and we are at the park and boat landing a few blocks down. Try your best to be there before 8:oo a.m., have a sweet roll or donut & coffee, Bait will be furnished P.S. Don’t forget the Awards—be sure to have your big fish measured Chasing Rainbows

Adaptive Water Skiing Event On February 22nd, Brian Hess and I had a chance to sit in on a clinic about adaptive water skiing. Advances in technology and safety have made water skiing sitting down a very exciting but safe sport. More and more learn to ski clinics are sprouting up, mostly in Southern Wisconsin. Ex-tremely disabled individuals can participate. Imagine getting out of your wheelchair for an exhila-rating ride across the water. One such learn to ski clinic is set for Saturday, June 7th at Pewaukee Lake near Milwaukee. Other clinics will be announced when that information is available. This event is located at Lake-front Park on the shores of Pewaukee Lake, (222. W Wisconsin, Pewaukee Lake, WI) You can register for this free event, (food and beverages will be provided throughout the day) by contacting Amy Look at 414-963-5952 Brian and I hope to see you there challenging yourself in the Out of Doors! Sporting Clay Fundraiser Recap By: Patrick Nieuwenhuis, President Hello Everyone, I would like to give you a quick rundown of our 16th Annual Sporting Clay Bene-fit. We had a total of 445 shooters with 71 shooting a second round the number was up from last year. Again the weather was great for the shooters. The morning started out a little cold but once the sun was up the temperature rose with it and it turned out to be just a beautiful day. And with that I need to thank so many groups and people that helped to make this Challenge The Outdoors Inc. Benefit possible. It’s hard to find a place to start. I would like to thank all the Groups, Or-ganizations, Businesses, and People that have been there for Challenge The Outdoors Inc. year after year supporting us with your outstanding donations. I would like to add that thank you to any new Donors that gave to Challenge The Outdoors Inc. if this was your first year. Your Dona-tions made it possible for Challenge The Outdoors Inc. to put on a Raffle with Outstanding Prizes, a Bucket Raffle, and we tried to make sure that every Shooter was given a Door Prize. I would also like to thank the army of volunteers that helped to make this Benefit possible. From the peo-ple that worked on the planning committee to work on new ways to stream line the ways to make the lines move through faster. From the people that worked so hard to collect all the donations. From all the people that worked days and nights organizing all the donations and labeling, num-bering, recording, delivering and then setting up all the items. From all the people that went out to J & H and worked all day on Friday getting everything set up and ready for Saturday. From all the volunteers that worked Saturday the day of the Benefit Cooking, Selling Bucket Raffle Tick-ets, Selling Raffle Tickets, Driving Shooters to and from their cars, People out on the lines for Safety, People Registering all the Shooters. And then the people that went out and did all the cleaning up on Sunday. If I missed people or someone please forgive me I know that not just my-self but all members from Challenge The Outdoors Inc. thank each and every one of you for your Donations and we thank all the Volunteers from the bottom of our hearts. Because if it was not for the generosity from all of you Challenge The Outdoors Inc. would not have the ability to put on the events throughout the year for our members.

CTO PONTOON 2014 The CTO pontoon (THE CHALLENGER) should be put in at the Cecil Dock on about May 1, 2014. This year we will be reserving the pontoon for the full day. Call Gary Thyes at (715) 584-7700. If anyone would like to just go for a 2 to 3 hour site seeing tour into Washington Lake and then around the island just call Gary Thyse and see if there is a time he can guide you around the lake for a couple hours. If you would like to go fishing for 3 hours call Gary and he will guide your group. To set up a time but not too early in the morning (he really needs his beauty sleep) call Gary. Remember fishing is not the only place you need a good line. Also remember if you are disabled CTO will pay for your gas but you have to fill the gas tank when you are done, get a receipt and sent the bill to CTO. If you have never taken out the pontoon you have to call Gary and set up an introduction hour before you can take it out. Gary Thyes (715) 584 7700

Pheasant Hunt The spring pheasant hunt on March 9th was a great success. Their were seventeen who shot pheasant and fourteen helpers. The wind was a bit breezy but it was great just to be able to get out and enjoy the outdoors. The food was great thanks to Joanne and Diane. Would like to thank Steve for all the help and cleaning the pheasants. Thank you to the members who brought des-serts. Special thanks to the dog owners. Mark your calendar for October 26, 2014 for the fall pheasant hunt. Hope to see you then.

CTO - UWGB Phoenix-Detroit Men’s Basketball Event January 28th 2014 The Resch Center Green Bay Challenge the Outdoors members were provided free tickets compliments of PMI to see the Hori-zon Conference Leader University of Wisconsin Green Bay Phoenix take on the University of De-troit, Titans, Sunday, January 26th at the Resch Center in Green Bay. Green Bay (17-3, 7-0 HL) shot just 28.3 percent from the field (13-46) against visiting Detroit (9-13, 2-5 HL) at the Resch Center. The end result was a 62-52 victory which extended Green Bay’s winning streak to 12 games. Junior Keifer Sykes had just six points at halftime, but scored half of his team’s 32 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 22 points. Senior Alec Brown drained a three during a 7-0 run that gave the Phoenix the win. Hot dogs and soda were just $1.00 each at this Game. The Phoenix has gone on to a 9-2 Horizon league record, and with five games left to play, hopes to host the Horizon League Tournament.

Keith Pamperin, Event Chair Hog Hunt By Rod Remme & Jim Adamovich February 16th, 2014 Jamie (Rod’s son) Rod and Jim went to Clarkridge, Tennessee for a hog hunt. Rod started setting up the hunt eight months before going. Bridge Creek Trophy Hunts sounded like the best place for us to go 50% of their stands are set up for the disabled. The hunt was two days and three nights lodging and included three meals a day. The weather was great 60’s and 70’s. We arrived on Monday and sighted in our gun and bow and explored the rest of the day. Tuesday morning Jim and his guide were out and Jim shot his hog with a gun at about 9:00 in the morning. Rod shot his hog with a cross bow in the afternoon on the same day. The cross bow arrow went right threw the hog and he just walked away laid down un-der the tree. The one Rod shot was a trophy hog, but he didn’t have it mounted. The meat is very good and lean. This is the best time we have had in a long time. We would like to thank our wife’s Cindy, Kate and Rita. The lodge were we stay treated us just like family. We also would like to thank CTO for helping us with the cost

6th ANNUAL LAKE MICHIGAN SALMON FISHING EVENT With Judy and Wayne Paluch We will have our 2014 Lake Michigan Fishing Event on JULY 12, 2014. Our two harbors that we are fishing out of are Algoma and Two Rivers. We have enough room for 28-35 disabled people, depending on the boats. The fishing boats will start boarding and leave Algoma's Harbor at 4:00 a.m. and Two Rivers' Harbor at 4:30 a.m. You should be at your harbor about 15 minutes early so we can be on the water by that time; please allow enough time. This is a disabled member only fishing event. Make sure you are paid up on your dues. We will be fishing for Salmon and Trout till about 9:30 a.m. The captain is the boss on his boat in all prob-lems. The helpers on each boat are the Captain and his First Mate. If we don't need any extra help-ers, we will have room for more disabled fishing people. If you have a special need to have a per-sonal helper, we will work something out. We do share the fish, because some boats might not get any, and other boats might get their lim-its. It all depends on the fish, the weather, and where you are fishing.

NOTE: You have to make reservations, and have to be disabled to fish in this event. Please call or e-mail me to make a reservation. I will notify everyone by e-mail or by phone, that I have you registered. Make sure that you talk to me or get an email back from me, to make sure you are reg-istered. If not call or email me again and put Lake Michigan in the subject line. I need your full name, your address-city-state-zip code, phone numbers, in a wheelchair or use canes or a walker to get around, and I need an e-mail address ( if you have one); and if no e-mail I will send the information to you by mail. If you need a map to get to the harbor, let me know, and I will also send some information on what you should bring along and wear. All of you need a Lake Michigan fishing license and Lake Michigan Salmon stamp. The captains can’t let you on the boat without it. This you will have to pay for. Those not fishing will have to also have a license and Salmon stamp. Ask if they have a 1-day or 3-day license and stamp; that is cheaper. If you have any questions, please call me at 920-336-1934, or e-mail me at palj22@att.net and my address is 1020 St. Anthony Drive, De Pere WI 54115. You can register till June 21, but we do have a waiting list so still register in case we have some-one cancel. Each year so far, we have had cancellations. Thank you, Think" big fish" and "good weather". Judy Paluch 1020 St. Anthony Drive De Pere, WI 54115 920-336-1934 palj22@att.net

You Are Needed!! CTO is looking for some of our members to serve on its Board of Directors. An election will take place at our Annual Membership meeting in July this year but before that we need candidates. That’s where we hope you come in! Are you interested in becoming more active in sharing your skills and interests to help CTO meet the needs and desires of the physically challenged people we serve? Is there a specific area that interests you such as; hunting, fishing, shooting, archery, boat-ing, fundraising etc? If you said yes then we ask you to please seriously think about tossing you hat in the ring and running for a spot on our board. With the many different and vital committees we have we’re sure you will find one that fits you well and we hope some of you will take this opportunity to come on board and help keep this great organization running strong into the coming years! We think you will find it to be a very re-warding and satisfying experience. We also have Associate Directors positions that you may be interested in. Associate Directors are not elected but are appointed by the Board and they attend the meetings and provide valuable in-put but do not have voting rights. This gives a person the opportunity to see how the Board works and gets their feet wet so to speak and hopefully grooms them to become future Directors. Your board of directors meets monthly, usually the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Seymour and Green Bay areas. Please contact Karen Baehr at: (920) 766-9218 if you would like to be a candidate for the CTO Board of Directors. Thank You!

INVITATION TO THE DOOR COUNTY RENAISSANCE FAIRE We are pleased to invite CTO members to experience the Renaissance Fantasy Faire which will be held in Door County, just north of Sturgeon Bay. The event will take place the weekends of June 28 - 29 and July 6 - 7, 2014. You may visit our web-site at http://www.doorfaire.com/ for more information about the event or find us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/RenaissanceFaire In addition to the early 1500's style Royal Court, live armored combat jousting, 4 stages, interactive period encampments, and a tented marketplace with dozens of vendors, we are expecting a Viking inva-sion! This fun and educational outdoor event is lots of fun for the entire family! Please contact Steve Harvey who is volunteering to help with this event and will be able to provide FREE admission tickets to a limited number of people. You can reach Steve at 920-494-3143. If you need additional information, please contact Sandy Stetler at 920-746-6773.

The 8th Annual Awards will be given out at the 2014 CTO annual banquet in the summer. Time frame to submit an entry for an award is from July 1, 2013 thru June 30, 2014. Procedures, Rules and Details: All the categories (Except Volunteer of the Year Able-bodied) entrants must have been a CTO DISABLED member before submitting an entry. The definition of a disabled member should meet at least 1 of the fol-lowing requirements: Have a Class A or C hunting permit from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Holding only a DNR Cross Bow permit is not considered to be “disabled enough” for this awards pro-gram. Can only ambulate with the use of a wheelchair, walker or two canes or two crutches from a disability considered permanent. Is legally blind. Is missing a hand or arm regardless of using prosthesis. Is over the age of 70 years. Other individuals can become qualified on a case-by-case basis. Contact Awards Administrator. The CTO Board of Directors shall appoint a CTO Director as “Awards Administrator”. In this capacity, this person will oversee tiebreakers, choose award winners in the “Honor” categories and otherwise admin-ister this program. A CTO disabled member can only win 1 of the hunting, fishing, or shooting categories in any one year. Enter as many categories as possible so you have a better chance at winning. A CTO disabled member can only win a Biggest Challenge Overcome Outside Award and a Deep Doo-doo Award twice, and Volunteer of the Year Award once for the life of this Awards Program. A CTO able-bodied member can only win a Volunteer of the Year Award once for the life of this Awards Program. Winners in these Honor categories might have their stories and photos published on our website and other publicity tools as are feasible. The winners will be notified of their Honors a few days before the banquet so they can prepare a brief presentation to the banquet attendees. The reason for this is to strive to show the group what a “real” winner does to gain such high recognition and provide inspiration for others to reach for similar achievements. Volunteers and others will be encouraged to remind or make entries for disabled members with or without the member’s knowledge. For example, boat captains on the Shawano Lake fishery will be advised to measure fish that might be award eligible. Award Categories: Biggest Challenge Overcome Outside: One year, a CTO member overcame his quadriplegia to hunt tur-keys on his own. He set and reset his blind to get the best spot; he got in the blind and set up and after sev-eral exciting close calls was able to bag a turkey. Try and top that one to win. A person can nominate themselves or be nominated by someone else. Past Winners include Mark Baehr 2007, Steve Lang 2008 & 2012, & James Luedke 2008. One winner was a wheelchair user who dropped a goose in a muddy cornfield and after his able bodied buddy could not find the goose, he crawled through the mud to find it himself. While the mud got washed off in a hot shower, the glow of the satisfaction of his achievement will last lots longer. So, get out there and expand your limits. HIGHLIGHTS BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS BY JUDY PALUCH & PETER LATHROP FEBRUARY 18, 2014 At this meeting there were not enough directors for a quorum so that we could vote on any items. We discussed items and will vote on them in March. Our Sporting clays Fundraiser is on Saturday, April 5th, 2014 at J&H Game farm located on Highway156 about 2 miles west of Navarino. Please tell your friends and neighbors be-cause this is our main fundraiser to fund our events, and it is a fun day with food and great raffles. Who is included in a Family Membership…husband, wife, and their children that live in the same home.

NOTE: We would like to eliminate soda from all the CTO events except the fundraiser. It is hard to carry coolers of soda, and people leave partial empty cans sitting all around, and all the different kinds of soda we have to have. If you want soda, please bring a small cooler with ice and your soda in it. One other problem we run into is the soda doesn’t last too long being stored. It gets flat unless stored in a cool place for a short time. MARCH 18, 2014 Associate director Rod Remme was appointed to the board of directors to fill the open posi-tion. It was recommended to not have absentee voting for the annual board of director’s election in July 2014. An event page was created on Facebook for the

16TH ANNIVERSARY SPORTING CLAY SHOOT CHALLENGE THE OUTDOORS, INC. ANNUAL BENEFIT. Facebook mem-bers could invite their Facebook friends to this event. The Memorial Scholarship application was mailed or e-mailed to 67 schools in 10 counties in Wisconsin. Cost Sharing Program for Adaptive Equipment We know adaptive equipment can be a bit pricey so our hope, by creating this cost sharing pro-gram in December of 2004, was to help our physically challenged members offset that cost and encourage them to purchase their own equipment. Thus creating more independence for them. So far CTO has helped several members purchase adaptive hunting equipment including crossbows and hand cranks, and an adapted gunstock. We are still waiting for the 1st adaptive fishing equip-ment request. For those unfamiliar with our cost sharing program here’s how it works. CTO will help our physically challenged members purchase adaptive hunting or fishing equipment by picking up to ½, but not to exceed $100.00, for the cost of the piece(s) of equipment 1 time per year. For example say Jane purchases a crank for her crossbow and it cost $150.00. CTO would reimburse Jane $75.00. To receive reimbursement for a piece of adaptive equipment you have purchased or to see if a piece of equipment you’re considering purchasing qualifies contact Jean or Harland Chapman. (920) 525-1123. *Note, keep your receipt and get a duplicate copy of the original because we will need a copy for our records. And if you return the item please reimburse CTO. If you are looking for sources of adaptive equipment there are hundreds to choose from so shop around and check our website out for links to sellers and suppliers and as al-ways please show patronage to the many businesses that have been so good to us over the years by giving them your and our business.
