A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SERVING THE RECREATIONAL NEEDS AND DESIRES OF THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SPORTSPERSON

Reflections of the President— Keith Pamperin

This is It ….Now is the time for all Challenge the Outdoors members and supporters to pull together and make our April 6th 2013 Sporting Clays Fund Raiser Shoot and Raffle at J & H Game Farm & Hunt Club our biggest and best ever! If Challenge the Outdoors Inc. is to continue to provide outdoor hunting, shooting, fishing, sailing, bowling and social opportunities for our disabled members and friends, we need to make our primary revenue producing event the 2013 Sporting Clays Shoot.

Last year we were slightly down on shooter registrations for the event but fortunately we had an increase in raffle sales. Everyone knows this is one of the fun events of the year, good competitive shooting, great food and outstanding raffle prizes including guns, fishing rods and reels and a variety of sporting goods. We need all CTO members and supporters to solicit cash donations, raffle prizes and door prizes. Raffle tickets and posters will be available soon. I am asking that you get posters and raffle tickets out to your church groups, Barber and Hair Salons, Sportsman Clubs and retail stores. This year we want you to use your social media skills to promote the CTO Sporting Clays Shoot and raffle ticket sales.

Use e-mail, Facebook, LinkedIn and any other media to invite your friends and family to join us at the shoot. And remember you cannot win unless you buy raffle tickets!

For more information, posters or raffle tickets call Jean Chapman, 920 525 1123, Steve Lang 920 948 4847 If you know of someone or a business that may be interested in making a contribution or raffle prize donation please have them contact one of the above or me, Keith A. Winter Ice Chasing Rainbows Date and Location Finalized

The Winter version of Chasing Rainbows will be held at the Wings Over Wisconsin Fishing Ponds a few miles east of Green Bay on Highway 29. The event is sent for Saturday, March 2nd, 2013 and is co-sponsored by Wings Over Wisconsin and Challenge the Outdoors.

We will ice fish the pond that we stocked last Fall with about 400 trout. We estimated that we caught about 100 trout at our Fall event. In addition, the pond is stocked with perch and bluegills which can also be kept. There will be a 5 trout per person limit.

The event will start at 8:30 am and run approximately until 2:00 PM. Bring your own lunch. We will provide bait and some extra fishing gear for those of you who do not have any. During a brief prefish in January, trout were all caught on wax worms and tiny tear drop jigs. But, we will also provide minnows. We will also have a bonfire and hot chocolate. No sign up or pre-registration is required.

Here are driving directions: For those of you with a Garmin or other type of dashboard GPS the address is: 5399 Kewaunee Road or 5399 State Trunk Highway, Denmark, WI. Driving from Green Bay head south on I-43 and take the first exit past the 172 interchange. After exiting right, take a left and cross over I-43, you are now on Elm View Road. There is a Shell Gas Station at this exit. Proceed east on Elm View Road till the first stop sign and turn left. You are now on Main Street or County Trunk “R”. Go about ½ mile and turn right on State Highway 29 or otherwise known as Kewaunee Road. Drive east on Highway 29 for 5.4 miles. Turn left at the Blue and White CTO sign and follow the signs to the fishing pond located about ¼ mile north of Highway 29.

2013 SHAWANO LAKE FISHERY

SATURDAY JUNE 1, 2013

Many residents and fishermen know we are on Shawano Lake this one time each year. We make quite a presence at the park and boat landing in Cecil. And—being there is what it’s all about. Out- door folks sharing what we want most. Camaraderie and good will. In the past we’ve had various weather conditions. But we’ve never had a bad day. Sure we want to catch fish and we do. Folks sitting around enjoying a good meal and telling stories, mostly about fishing and the big one that got away is always a joy to hear. (By the way—it’s OK to tell tall tales on this day as long as it’s about fishing.)

There will be a Registration Form in the May 2013 newsletter that must be completed and returned by May 25th so we can be sure of enough pontoon boats for all to fish. Drive to Cecil, turn right at the lake and we are at the park and boat landing a few blocks down. Try your best to be there be- fore 8:oo a.m., have a sweet roll or donut & coffee,

Bait will be furnished. Call Jeff at 920-366-5731 or e-mail at jcpagels@att.net if you have questions

P.S. Don’t forget the Awards—be sure to have your big fish measured!

LAKE MICHIGAN SALMON FISHING EVENT

We are getting our boat captain’s boats signed up at both harbors. We will be fishing on Monday, July 1, at 4:30 a.m. at Two Rivers and 4:00 a.m. at Algoma. You should be there at least 10 minutes before, to make sure we are all boarded on time. I will send information to those that have not been on the boats and don’t know what to take and how to get there. Last year we had the best time, the King Salmon and Rainbow Trout were everywhere. We do share the fish! This way everyone gets some fish to have a delicious dinner. Last year no one had to share, they all got enough fish.

If you are interested in fishing in Lake Michigan for King Salmon and Rainbow Trout, please call me at 920-336-1934 or email me at palj22@att.net. You must be a disabled member of Challenge The Outdoors and up to date on your membership. This is a disabled person fishing event only. My name is Judy Paluch and Wayne Paluch is the person in charge of Two Rivers.

Our openings are limited to a first come basis. The latest you may sign up by is June 21. Sometimes there is a person or two that might drop out after this date; so we have a sign up list and I call to fill the openings. Our captains and their first mates are our helpers. If you can’t drive to get to the harbor, you may bring along only one helper to drive you, but they will not be fishing and have to sign up too. Both of you need a fishing license and Lake Michigan Salmon stamp, No one can go out on the boat without a license and stamp: even if you are not fishing. You also will have to be signed up ahead in order to participate. I have to assign people to boats depending on how much room I have. The captains tell me how many people they can handle, and I fill the boats that way. Don’t just show up.

In case I am not home, leave your phone number clearly and your name on my answering machine; mention that you are interested in Lake Michigan Fishing Event. I will call you back as soon as I can. Make sure that you talk to me before you plan on fishing. Speak clearly so I know who to call. We have Two Rivers and Algoma harbors and the spaces fill up quite fast. I will keep a waiting list, but best to get your name in early. It is a great day!

SPRING PHEASANT HUNT

J & H GAME FARM MARCH 10, 2013

It’s hard to believe a year has gone by since our last spring pheasant hunt, but March is just around the corner…and hopefully it will bring nice weather with it. This year’s CTO Spring Pheasant Hunt will again be held at J&H Game Farm in Navarino on Sunday, March 10 and will start at about 8 am. There always seems to be plenty of food at these events, and J&H has plenty of pheasants, but please give me a call if you plan to attend. It makes it easier to plan for everyone involved. I can be reached at 715-250-0077 or you can also email me at steve.kettenhoven@gmail.com.

Also…PLEASE REGISTER AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE AT J&H. We want to make sure everyone gets a chance to shoot some birds and that we get you on one of the transport vehicles as soon as possible.

We try to make sure every member gets two birds to take home, but if you have to leave before the hunt is over, the birds you’ve shot will not be cleaned in time for you to take them home.

We had a great time at the fall hunt and I look forward to seeing you all in March as well.

CTO Bowling & Card Party

The first monthly CTO Bowling & Card Party took place Wednesday, February 6th at the Clinton- ville Lanes. There were only six members that attended, with five of us bowling up to three games. We all used the ramps that were recently purchased by CTO and we really had a great time. After the second game, we took a short lunch break. Wednesday is Dollar Day at Clintonville Lanes so you can get a great tasting burger, fries and soda for just three dollars.

CTO will be holding this event for the next several months on the first Wednesday of every month from noon until 4 pm. This event is open to ALL CTO members and you can choose to bowl up to three games, that will be paid for by CTO, or you can also play cards like cribbage or sheepshead. It’s a great opportunity to get together with fellow members, so come out and have some fun. Next event will be Wednesday, March 6th at noon. Hope to see you all there. If you need more info contact Steve Kettenhoven at steve.kettenhoven@gmail.com or 715-250-0077.

Bowling at Badger State Games

Steve Kettenhoven

On January 19 I had the opportunity to compete in the bowling competition at the Badger State Games at Coral Lanes in Rothschild. Before entering the games I had to establish an average by competing in a United States Bowling Congress sanctioned league. Steve Hansen from the Clintonville Lanes explained that this would require 21 games, or 7 weeks of three games per week in league play. After completing the seven week league, I had a USBC established average of 149, which put me in Division C at the Winter Games.

I didn’t bowl my best during the seeding round, but I was able to bounce back during the medal round, earning gold with a 224 game. I was using one of the Champ Ramps that CTO had pur- chased and after figuring out where I needed to deliver my ball with respect to the oil on the lanes, my ball hooked into the pocket to give me four straight strikes to start off the game. Needless to say…I was pretty excited about finishing first.

After the individual competition, I was asked by Coral Lanes to compete in a three man team event. Even though I’m always up for a challenge, I was a bit hesitant in accepting because I would be teaming up with two players I had never met. We bowled well in the qualifying round and received the top seed for the medal round. It was the exact opposite however in the gold medal match as all three of us struggled on the deteriorating oil conditions and wound up with the silver medal for team competition.

I’d like to thank CTO for their support and assistance. This was a great experience and I would highly recommend the Badger State Games to all CTO members. The games will be held again this summer and you can check out the slate of events at www.sportsinwisconsin.com.

CHRISTMAS PARTY FUN

Written by JUDY PALUCH

Our Holiday party was held at Clintonville Bowling Lanes on Saturday, January 26th. The banquet room was big and nice sized for our group and even larger. Also the bowling alley was not hard to drive to.

We had Sloppy Joes and Ham on buns with the different dishes that each family brought as their favorite foods. What a delicious meal and, of course, there were desserts of many different kinds. We had coffee, milk, soda, and water to drink.

There were many door prizes, and Jean Chapman donated a large supply of puzzles for people to choose from. We even had puzzles left over.

Most of the people went into the bowling alley after the prizes were given out. We had 12-lanes for the bowlers and plenty of assisted bowling equipment.

We want to thank, Harland Chapman for the opening songs and Cindy Mateer played the harp for great mood music to eat by. Also we thank Karen Baehr and Rita Adamovich for the wonderful job of getting the food prepared, setting out all the side dishes, and for doing the big job of cleanup after. Steve Kettenhoven and Peter Lathrop worked out the details of the party with the owner of Clintonville Lanes. Cindy Mateer, Patrick Nieuwenhuis, and I worked on getting the prizes. Jim Adamovich sold CTO hats and shirts. We also want to thank you the members for bringing a side dish for the potluck and a non-perishable food item for a local food pantry. As you can see it takes a number of people to put the Christmas party together!

We also had people folding letters and four Cribbage players that had their own little tournament. There wasn’t enough for a real tournament, but they sure had fun. Maybe next year we can go back to having a cribbage tournament and get it started earlier.

We had a good time and if you have suggestions that you would like to have at next year’s party, please let us know. Peter Lathrop 920-982-4288 –e-mail plcaravan@yahoo.com or Judy Paluch 920-336-1934 –e-mail palj22@att.net

It is your party—Let’s have fun!

Thank You, to our volunteer members and supporters!

By: Keith Pamperin, President

As we look back on last year, the recent Holiday Party, Clintonville Lanes Bowling event, and Gamblers Game, and the schedule of events planned for disabled members for 2013, I am amazed how we have volunteer members that step up to the task to get things done.

Challenge the Outdoors Inc. does not have paid staff and everything that gets done gets done by disabled volunteer members and supporters. Sometimes members might think there is no room for them to participate, which is not the case. Remember this is your organization; we welcome your input and participation. If you would like to help with an event or serve on a committee please call me. We Need You! Keith Pamperin

2nd Annual Green Bay Walleye Hunt

Challenge the Outdoors is pleased to announce that we will be repeating our successful walleye hunt from last year with the help of members of the Green Bay Fire Department! Our 2nd Annual Walleye Hunt will be held Tuesday, June 4th on the Bay of Green Bay somewhere within 15 miles of the City of Green Bay. Just as last year, we will pair up a disabled fisherperson with a volunteer and his/her boat for a half day of trolling for walleye. All gear will be provided including a meal after fishing. Bring a cooler if you want to take your catch home with you. The exact landing location will be announced as we get closer to the event as the fish move around and our guides want to key in on the nearest landing to the good fishing. One thing for sure is that it will be within 15 miles of the City of Green Bay.

This event will be limited to the first 20 participants who register, so act fast if you are interested. We will be keeping a backup list in case participants drop out. Knowing this please be sure to contact me ASAP if you do register and decide later that you cannot make it, so that someone else can take advantage of the opportunity.
