A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SERVING THE RECREATIONAL NEEDS AND DESIRES OF THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SPORTSPERSON

Reflections of the President—Steve Lang

As the New Year calendar turned, the CTO Board of Directors have put a budget in place and planned sched- uled events. There are plans to keep every event from last year, PLUS add two more events. This has become possible because of the continued notoriety CTO continues to gain across the Fox Valley/Green Bay Area and across the state. This continued growth and ability to provide the activities and events that you wish to partici- pate in, can only happen with your help.

At last year’s Annual Fundraiser, with all of the members help, CTO had its best year ever! It was our organi- zations highest numbers of shooters ever and our highest amount of income ever! These are great, great ac- complishments. Everyone needs to be proud of them. Everyone also needs to be aware that, yes, we raised a very nice amount of funds last year, but it takes a great deal of funds to put all the events on that our members wish to participate in. Since our last fundraiser, we as an organization, have spent virtually every cent of what was brought in through our great fundraising effort. With this being said, we as an organization need to do it again.

Every member, even if you don’t wish to shoot at the fundraiser, can help in some way to make the fundraiser a huge success again. The fundraiser needs raffle prizes, door prizes, ticket sellers, and just people around to answer question others may have. Any and all help is greatly appreciated and words can’t express how much your help means to the people organizing the fundraiser. If you can help in any way or have a raffle/door prize, please contact Jean Chapman and let her know. Let’s all remember, that without the membership helping with the Annual Fundraiser, the CTO Board of Directors can’t provide the activities that the members wish to participate in. The two must work together in order for our organization to work fluently. Let’s do it again this year. Let’s make this year’s Annual Fundraiser even bigger! Let’s continue to be able to provide the events that the members wish to have. Let’s just do it!!!

SPRING PHEASANT HUNT - J & H GAME FARM MARCH 11, 2012

It’s time again for the CTO Spring Pheasant Hunt at J&H Game Farm in Navarino. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, March 11 and will start at 8 am. There always seems to be plenty of food at these events, and J&H has plenty of pheasants, but please give me a call if you plan to attend. It makes it easier to plan for everyone involved. I can be reached at 715-250-0077 or you can also email me at steve.kettenhoven@gmail.com.

Also…PLEASE REGISTER AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE AT J&H. We want to make sure everyone gets a chance to shoot some birds and that we get you on one of the transport vehicles as soon as possi- ble. We try to make sure every member gets two birds to take home, but should you have to leave before the hunt is over, the birds you’ve shot will not be cleaned. We had a great time at the fall hunt and I look forward to seeing you all in March as well.

1st Time Ice Fishing By Myself

Steve Lang

It’s early January and I’m itching to get ice fishing, but I can’t seem to get times and dates to work out for others to go with me. The weather was seemed to be in the high teens, with only a very little bit of snow on the ground. So me being stubborn, as others call me, I decided that I am going to go ice fishing anyway. I will just do it by myself, just me and my wheelchair.

So I backed my van up to my trailer and hooked it up. Then I had to load the 4-wheeler onto the trailer. After a few minutes of strapping the 4-wheeler down, I realized that I needed to get my fishing gear yet. I rolled to the house, grabbed my jig poles and bait, then a trip to the shed for the power ice au- ger. I have probably spent now about 45 minutes getting everything around to go fishing and I was finally off to the lake.

Once at the lake I had to undo everything I had just done, get the 4-wheeler off the trailer, get the poles and bait, load the auger onto the 4-wheeler. I managed to get this all done in about 15 minutes and was off to the lake. Once on the lake, I drove on the ice about 5 feet and decided it would be best to drill a test hole to make sure the ice was safe before driving farther with eh 4-wheeler and falling through the ice. After drilling the hole, while sitting on the 4-wheeler, I found that the ice was about 5” thick. Know- ing that it was probably not the best idea to go farther with the 4-wheeler, I put the fishing gear down and headed back to the van for my wheelchair to pursue fishing farther on the lake. I threw my wheelchair on the back of the 4-wheeler and headed back to the lake to retrieve my fishing gear again. Once back to the ice, I climbed down into my wheelchair, picked up the ice auger, laid it on my lap, and headed farther onto the ice. I reached my fishing destination, and began to drill my first hole.

Things didn’t go as I had planned. I was able to drill the hole while sitting in my wheelchair, but as the auger went through the ice, the auger blades grabbed the bottom of the hole and ripped the auger from my hands and the auger fell onto the ice. I had to try and pick up the auger with one hand, without falling out of the wheelchair, while the blade always seemed to spin the wrong way. I was able to get the auger out, but the same thing happened for the next hole that I drilled also. I wanted to drill a third hole, so I drilled at a slower speed, and I was able to control the auger better and without problems. So with my three holes for jigging made, I headed back to shore to drop my auger off and grab my poles and bait.

With my poles and bait in hand, I was back out to my drilled holes and got ready to fish. I got my lines in the water and waited for a fish to bite. It took about 10 min to get a bite, but the day became worth it when I pulled up my first bluegill of the day. It wasn’t the biggest, but it was the culmination of the accomplishment I had just achieved. I had just done something that I had been told I couldn’t do by others, even medical professionals. I came home with about a dozen nice bluegill for the table, but the ability to say “I can do it” is the real prize that I brought home.

Spring Turkey Hunt May 11-13, 2012

CTO and Shadows on The Wolf are planning a spring turkey hunt for May 11 thru the 13th for its dis- abled members. Hunters will need a permit for the 5th week of the Wild Turkey season in zone 3. If you did not draw a permit, remaining permits will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Each zone will have a designated sales date, for zone 3 it will be on March 23, 2012. Lodging for the hunt will be at Christus Memorial Camp located a few miles from Clintonville.

We will be accepting approximately 14 hunters this year please email Cliff Pheifer at deb57ncliff55@gmail.com or call 715-256-1401 if you would like to hunt.

CTO is Going Ice Fishing

SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2012 10:00 am to 3:00 pm

After several years of no effort, Challenge the Outdoors will be attempting to pull off a day of ice fishing later this winter. We say “Attempt”, because it will be dependent on safe ice conditions and decent weather. So, even though we have picked a day, you need to watch our information distribu- tion systems for the latest up to date information on the event.

We will be holding this event on a nice little 5 acre pond chuck full of fish on the Bob Singler prop- erty north of Shiocton. There will be a limited amount of ice fishing gear available, so feel free to bring your own if you have it. (Jig rods and tip ups). Bait will be provided.

We will be allowed to keep all the bluegills caught, but any other species will need to be released back into the water. But, before releasing them, we will measure them as the longest of each species will get a $25 gift certificate from Gander Mountain. (All award rules apply including that a disabled member can only win once.) Other species in the pond are trout, crappie, perch, walleye, large- mouth bass and small-mouth bass.

For this event, which is on a licensed game farm, no fishing license is required. Please bring a dish to pass that we don’t have to heat up and your own beverages.

To get to the Singler Game Farm, turn north on Highway 187 on the east side of Shiocton off High- way 54. Go about 2.2 miles north on 187 and then turn east on County Trunk “P” and go one mile, then turn north on Kliener Road and go about one mile. The game farm is on the right and is surrounded by a fence and gate. A gate attendant will let you in while insuring that none of the 70 plus deer running around gets out.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Cliff Pheifer at (715) 256 1401 or e-mail at: deb57ncliff55@gmail.com And, boy, do we need volunteers!

How do you read this newsletter?

For the January issue of the CTO newsletter, 64 members read the news letter on line, which cost CTO nothing. At the same time, more than 319 members were mailed a hard copy of the newsletter which cost $.78 a copy for a total expense to CTO of more than $300. We are not even sure all of those newsletters are read. CTO publishes a newsletter 6 times per year which results in processing costs exceeding $2,000 annually. This cost does not include the many, many volunteer hours spent copying, collating, sealing and stamping the hard copy newsletters.

Needless to say, the $2,000 annual expense could be money better spent elsewhere in the organization. If you own a computer and receive a mailed hard copy version of the newsletter, please consider changing to getting your copy via email. We do not want to deprive anyone the opportunity to read the newsletter, but at the same time, it is much easier on both ends to get the newsletter via email.

Just send an email to Jean Chapman, chapjean1@yahoo.com asking that you be placed on the electronic subscription list. We do not sell or give away our list of names, but if that thought bothers you, you can still read the newsletters anytime on line at our WEB site. Still email Jean to let her know you are reading the newsletter on our WEB site and don’t need the hard copy. Every penny saved here can be used elsewhere to help us help others enjoy the Great Outdoors. Thank You!!

CTO is Catching Rainbows

SATURDAY, MAY 19, 2012 8:00 am to 2:00 pm

This May, Challenge the Outdoors will be spending a beautiful spring day fishing Wilderness Springs Trout Farm. The farm is located west of New London on HWY 54 for about 3 miles, then right on Madden Road for about 2miles. The fish farm is on the right. (Zander Pond is off limits to anyone but Zander family members, so please respect their wishes.)

To catch rainbows, no fishing license required. Fishing poles, bait, cleaning, and packing on ice will be provided. Bring a cooler to transport your catch back home. You may bring your own poles and secret lures if you like, but no live bait! This year we are going to be roughing it without the use of heat or electricity. Please bring a dish to pass that we don’t have to heat up and your own beverages.

  Fishing rules:

#1 CTO members, able or disabled, may catch a maximum of 3 trout.

#2 No catch and release. If you want to catch more trout, you will have to pay the going rate for them to the fish pond owners.

#3 No live bait.

If you have any questions, please contact Cliff Pheifer at (715) 256 1401 or e-mail at: deb57ncliff55@gmail.com

Awards Program Adds a New Category

The CTO Annual Awards program has added a new category to the many now offered. The new category, titled “Second Chance” will be awarded at random to one of the entries that did not win another award. For example, if you entered your buck deer with a smaller rack or you enter a 2-inch perch and they do not win the “biggest” category, your name goes into the drawing for the “Second Chance” award.

After all the awards are given out at the banquet, a drawing will be held to determine at random who wins the “Second Chance” award which will consist of a package of fishing and hunting prizes including lures, an ice fishing tip up, ammo storage belt and more.

So, remember, even small fish can win an award because a disabled member can win only one category. That means now, that even a two inch perch has more than one chance to win something.

There are 7 months left in this year’s contest including the upcoming ice fishing season, the regular spring season and the annual Shawano Lake Fisheree. Take the little bit of extra time to enter your fish or animal with Jeff Pagels at jcpagels@att.net ; include a photo of your entry.
