MARCH, 2014
A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SERVING THE RECREATIONAL NEEDS AND DESIRES OF THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SPORTSPERSON
Vice President's Report - Jim Adamovich You know that it s not just the board that makes CTO work, the volunteers and members is what makes it happen. We appreciate all the help that is given by volunteers and members. Put it on you calendar that April 5, 2014 is the annual fund raiser that helps make it happen for all the coming year. The money that we make from the fund raiser is how we are able to do the events for the next coming year. If there is any way you would like to help please let us know. With all of your help we can make this the best fund raiser we have had. You will be receiving a letter shortly about selling ticket as this is one of the ways we need your help.
16th ANNUAL SPORTING CLAY FUNDRAISER J & H GAME FARM, NAVARINO APRIL 5, 2014 It may seem early to start thinking about our fundraiser but it isn’t. Since this is the only fund-raising CTO does to run all the programs offered to the members it is important that more get involved in the preparation, the event day itself and the follow up duties. This year we will not be sending raffle tickets in the letters you will receive. Instead all members, those who shot last year, etc will be receiving their letters and information in the near future (if you don’t already have it). There will be information in there as to how you can get tickets in advance by filling out the enclosed order form. Let’s all work together to make this year a good one. We were down in numbers last year (lousy weather may have been the cause) so hopefully 2014 will be a great year. Let us hear from you Pheasant Hunt March 9, 2014 Brrrrr its been cold but we are thinking ahead to better weather. We are having the Pheasant Hunt March 9, 2014 from 8:00 A.M. to ????. Shells will be furnished by John Kempen and is very much appreciated, Thanks John! We will supply 12 gauge and 20 gauge shells 5 shot and 6 shot. Come and enjoy all the stories (even a little stretching of the truth is permitted. Please thank J&H and all the volunteers with their dogs and ATV’s for making this day possible.

Wisconsin River Power Company Disabled Deer Hunt By: Jeff Pagels Besides the traditional CTO disabled deer hunt program held in October there is another alternative for disabled hunters to consider. Integrys, Inc, and a subsidiary, the Wisconsin River Power Company has been for several years now sponsoring a disabled hunt on 700 acres of private wild-life refuge land near the community of Necedah in Adams County, Wisconsin. This is the only time this property is opened up to hunting for the entire year and is limited to about ten disabled hunters. In past years, it was common for all ten hunters to take a deer with some being impressively large bucks. The October 2013 version proved to be a lot tougher as the hunters were to find out. Three CTO members, Tommy Narmore, Steve Lang and Jeff Pagels were selected to participate this year along with five other disabled hunters from around the State. (Ten were chosen, but two had to cancel for illness reasons.) Friday afternoon, October 11th was warm and windy. So warm in fact that Jeff Pagels hunted for several hours in just an orange T-shirt. He was situated in one of 10 accessible ground blinds near a large body of water with over a thousand geese floating on the surface. (Remember, this is a wildlife refuge.) About 4:00 p.m. Jeff and his helper, Bill Bosacki, (an employee of Integrys) were idly watching a small doe on the other side of the pond about 400 yards away. Bill quietly tapped Jeff on his arm and pointed to a clump of trees and brush about 45 yards away. At first it looked like a large doe feeding on the abundant acorns, but they soon learned that it was a four-point buck. Jeff, hunting with a traditional 50 caliber round ball muzzleloader kept looking for a decent shot, but the buck did a good job of keeping his vital spots hidden. After awhile, the buck meandered onto a logging road and started walking right toward the blind. When he got to 30 yards, he turned sideways and offered a perfect shot. Jeff aimed just behind the front shoulder and fired. A black powdered muzzleloader creates lots of smoke and a thunderous roar. As the deer took off so did all the geese. It was so loud, Bill and Jeff had to wait until the flocks flew away to talk. Bill was concerned because after the shot the buck bounced away, seemingly unhurt with his white tail flying. Bill went over to where the deer was standing and could find neither blood nor hair. He could not help but think Jeff missed. He also walked over to the last place we saw the deer run which was into a marsh. Again, nothing. Jeff told Bill to walk down the logging road and check where the deer and run across after the shot. Jeff kept replaying the shot in his head and could not fathom that he might have missed. Walking on the road, Bill spotted one tiny drop of bright red blood. After more searching in the direction the deer had run, he found another two drops. It seems Jeff hit his target after all. It was starting to get dark, so they decided to wait until after dark when additional trackers would arrive. After dark, the blood trail got easier to find and soon the deer was located about 150 yards from where Jeff shot. The round ball entered behind the front shoulder but did not exit. That was the reason for so little blood.
CTO Deer Hunt 2013 By: Pat Nieuwenhuis Hello everyone, well Mother Nature was not on our side again this year with thunder storms on Saturday afternoon and 70’s and high winds on Sunday. But like all hunters know you have to take the good with the bad and try to make the best of it. And we did, and we had some nice deer taken on opening weekend. Gerald Pienta took a nice 10 pointer, Judy Paluch dropped a nice 6 pointer, and Bill Mayville ended up with a couple of nice does by his house. We also had some hunters that had a miss here and there so the deer were out and even though the weather was not the best. I can’t forget about Steve Harvey, he finished off the hunt with a great 8 pointer the last Saturday night of the week for a total of 4 deer this year. I would like to thank Karen Baehr and her great staff of helpers that again made sure that every hunter went out into the woods with a full belly of GREAT food both days. They even asked the hunter if we wanted some sandwiches for the road now what more can a hunter ask for. And a big thanks to Bill Mayville and Rod Bark-haus and their crew of helpers for getting all of us hunters into and out of the woods Saturday and Sunday. Thank you to all that gave of your time to help put on this hunt because without you we would not be where we are today having a great time in the woods. Take care, be safe, have fun, and God Bless Steve Lang saw over 30 deer that Friday night, but was waiting for a buck so he did not shoot. However, he did not have to wait long Saturday morning when just after daybreak he downed an 8-point in its tracks at just under 200 yards with a scoped rifle. Another hunter from Kenosha also shot a 4-point buck. Steve Boney from Luxemburg belly grazed a nice doe Saturday morning that escaped unharmed, but made up for it later by bringing down a different doe. Tom Narmore, also hunting with a muzzleloader on Saturday lost an opportunity to shoot a buck when the gun miss-fired. The hunt is always scheduled for the second weekend of the October Wisconsin Disabled Hunt. Applications and other information is available by contacting Darrin Johnson dmjohn-son@integrysgroup.com or phone at 715-345-7509. Lastly, the hunt headquarters is located at the Petenwell Dam and just downstream is a very popular fishing area complete with an accessible fishing pier. You might want to consider bringing a fishing pole along with your smoke pole. The following information was just received from Gregory Egtvedt of Integrys Group concerning the 2014 deer hunt that Jeff, Steve and Tommy attended in 2013 as seen in the article above. It sounds like a great time and if anybody is interested and would like more information please look at the web page listed below.
The WRPCO 2014 deer hunt is scheduled for October 10th, 11th & 12th in the WRPCO owned 750 acre Petenwell Wildlife Area located adjacent to the Wisconsin River near Necedah, Wisconsin. Please see the WRPCO Deer Hunt web page (http://www.wisconsinriverpower.com/hunt.aspx) for more information about our hunt.
RECAP OF HOLIDAY PARTY 2014 By Judy Paluch & Peter Lathrop The weather was absolutely rotten. With the snow that we received, the roads were quite bad; and other areas had the problem of black ice. With black ice, the road looks ok till you are on it, and then there is no control of your car. Jim and Rita Adamovich encountered the black ice, flipped over, and ended up upside down in the ditch. Thank heaven that they were not hurt except for a few bruises. They had someone take them home and the truck was left there till the next day. We should have canceled the party, but we didn’t think that the roads would be that bad, but the blowing snow was one of the problems. We knew not everyone had called in to let us know they were coming, so we continued to Clintonville. Some people that did call said they would not be there if the weather was bad and we told them that would be fine. Next year, we might have the party later in the day. This would give the committee time to see what the weather and roads are like and to notify people if we need to cancel. Unfortunately, there still might be people that will make the trip to find no one there. This is some advice, if the weather is bad and dangerous just stay home. The Board of Directors always wants members to put their safety first! We registered 50 people that made it through to the party. Before we ate, Harland sang 2 songs and Dave Samsa said a prayer. We had a delicious meal thanks to Karen and everyone who brought a dish to pass. The non-perishable food donations were delivered to 2 food pantries, thank you! Many of the people went bowling and many of the rest folded letters for the Sporting Clay Fund-raiser. We did have a good time and visited with many of the people that we don’t get to see very often. At the end, we bid each person bye and safe travels before they left. The CTO members that helped with the party were Rita & Jim Adamovich, Karen Baehr, Jean & Harland Chapman, Steve Kettenhoven, Bob Lathrop, Peter Lathrop, Bobbie Mehler, Judy & Wayne Paluch.
CTO - UWGB Phoenix-Detroit Men’s Basketball Event January 28th 2014 The Resch Center Green Bay Challenge the Outdoors members were provided free tickets compliments of PMI to see the Horizon Conference Leader University of Wisconsin Green Bay Phoenix take on the University of Detroit, Titans, Sunday, January 26th at the Resch Center in Green Bay. Green Bay (17-3, 7-0 HL) shot just 28.3 percent from the field (13-46) against visiting Detroit (9-13, 2-5 HL) at the Resch Center. The end result was a 62-52 victory which extended Green Bay’s winning streak to 12 games. Junior Keifer Sykes had just six points at halftime, but scored half of his team’s 32 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 22 points. Senior Alec Brown drained a three during a 7-0 run that gave the Phoenix the win. Hot dogs and soda were just $1.00 each at this Game. The Phoenix has gone on to a 9-2 Horizon league record, and with five games left to play, hopes to host the Horizon League Tournament. Keith Pamperin, Event Chair
LAKE MICHIGAN SALMON FISHING EVENT With Judy and Wayne Paluch We will have our 2014 Lake Michigan Fishing Event on JULY 12, 2014. Our two harbors that we are fishing out of are Algoma and Two Rivers. We have enough room for 28-35 disabled people, depending on the boats. The fishing boats will start boarding and leave Algoma's Harbor at 4:00 a.m. and Two Rivers' Harbor at 4:30 a.m. You should be at your harbor about 15 minutes early so we can be on the water by that time; please allow enough time. This is a disabled member only fishing event. Make sure you are paid up on your dues. We will be fishing for Salmon and Trout till about 9:30 a.m. The captain is the boss on his boat in all problems. The helpers on each boat are the Captain and his First Mate. If we don't need any extra helpers, we will have room for more disabled fishing people. If you have a special need to have a personal helper, we will work something out. If your helper goes along, that person will not be fishing. This year will be our sixth year and every year we have a wonderful time. We do share the fish, because some boats might not get any, and other boats might get their limits. It all depends on the fish, the weather, and where you are fishing. You have to make reservations, and have to be disabled to fish in this event. Please call or e-mail me to make a reservation. The places on the boats are based on the newer people that have never been on the fishing trip will be first, and then based on how many fishing trips you have been on. We will also have a waiting list. I will notify everyone by e-mail or by phone, that I have you registered. Make sure that you talk to me or get an email back from me, to make sure you are registered. I need your full name, your address-city-state-zip code, phone numbers, put down if you are in a wheelchair or use canes or a walker to get around, and I need an e-mail address ( if you have one); and if no e-mail I will send the information to you by mail. If you need a map to get to the harbor, let me know, and I will also send some information on what you should bring along and wear. All of you need a Lake Michigan fishing license and Lake Michigan Salmon stamp. The captains can’t let you on the boat without it. This you will have to pay for. Those not fishing will have to also have a license and Salmon stamp. Ask if they have a 1-day or 3-day license and stamp that is cheaper. If you have any questions, please call me at 920-336-1934, cell phone is 920-619-5154, or e-mail me at palj22@att.net and my address is 1020 St. Anthony Drive, De Pere WI 54115. We will be having breakfast after we get off the water at Caffe’ Tlazo in Algoma and M&M restaurant in Two Rivers. We do have very special menus that the restaurants have made for us that are delicious. Wayne Paluch is in charge of the Two Rivers Harbor and I, Judy Paluch, and Kevin Naze are in charge of the Algoma Harbor. You can register till June 28, but we do have a waiting list so still register in case we have some-one cancel. Each year so far, we have had cancellations. Thank you, Think" big fish" and "good weather". Judy Paluch 1020 St. Anthony Drive De Pere, WI 54115 920-336-1934
2014 CTO Ice Fishing for Whitefish Event Saturday, February 8, 2014 The Bay of Green Bay near Volks Reef Disabled CTO Member Attendees: (6 members) Volunteers (8 Volunteers) Event Summary Weather was fine for ice fishing. Before sunrise, the temperature was -3 but warmed up to 12 above with a light wind for most of the day. Surface conditions were such that most attendees were able to drive to the fishing site, albeit being stuck was only a temporary problem that teamwork took care of quickly. We had each wheelchair user in a portable fishing blind along with usually an able-bodied assistant. Each blind was outfitted with heat and either a vexilar fish finder or underwater camera. John Martinson brought his strange looking unit that goes on either dry land or water. He fished right through the bottom of the rig. The Television Show “Outdoor Wisconsin” was on hand to film a TV show that will be aired later this summer about disabled people out of doors. Besides the upcoming TV showing the event was extensively posted about on various face book pages. Every CTO member except one caught at least one fish. Jeff Pagels caught 10 and his six-year-old grandson caught three. About 26 white fish were caught and distributed to those who wanted to take some home to eat. Hot hamburgers and chocolate chip cookies were served along with beverages at noon. Thanks to Cindy Mateer for donating the cookies we had for dessert. Total CTO costs for the event were $81.88. This cost was for food, fishing bait and propane heating tanks. Guide costs and transport for those who needed it to the fishing location were donated. Guide costs are usually $80 per person and $20 for transport to and from shore. Those costs, would have added over $500, but as said, was donated. Co-chairs for this event were CTO members Cliff Pfeifer and Jeff Pagels and Green & Gold Guide Service owner, Jim Kleist. Jeff Pagels prepared this report.

December 17, 2013 The office of Challenge The Outdoors, Inc. will be moving to Home Instead Senior Care on Anderson Drive in Green Bay during the next few months. This will not cause any changes in the operation of CTO, and the phone number and address will not change for now. This change is for more room and accessibility. There will be more information in future newsletters, and make sure to keep your newsletter in a good place to access all our future events and the new contact information.
Tickets for our Sporting Clay Fund Raiser at J&H Game Farm will arrive by mid-February. Since we can’t send any tickets through the mail, we will have names and contact information of people to get in touch with and get the orders filled. January 15, 2014 The Milwaukee Adaptive Sports and Recreation Expo is on Saturday, July 26th at Medical College of Wisconsin. CTO received a grant of $1,000 from Schneider International. Big topics of discussion were the moving of the CTO office, sporting clays fundraiser, and the shooting leagues policy proposal.
INVITATION TO THE DOOR COUNTY RENAISSANCE FAIRE We are pleased to invite CTO members to experience the Renaissance Fantasy Faire which will be held in Door County, just north of Sturgeon Bay. Recipe Corner A few people have been asking for a spot in the newsletter for some recipes on different ways to cook different fish, or a tip on how to get a taste out of wild meat, or different meals using wild meat. If you have some special recipes like that for wild game and fish, please e-mail them to Jean at chapjean1@yahoo.com or send them to her at N8154 County Hwy M, Shiocton, WI 54170. Please type or print them out for her. If you have e-mail, send the recipe typed out in an attachment so she can just pop it into the newsletter. This is a great idea.
