A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SERVING THE RECREATIONAL NEEDS AND DESIRES OF THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SPORTSPERSON

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGGE –Steve Lang

Many times around this time of the year, I get asked either in person or on the phone. ―What do you and the other CTO Board of Director’s do now? There are hardly any events happening until after our annual fundraiser.‖ Well there is not a simple answer to that question. There are always legal questions to answer, also we’re working on finding ways to make events bigger and better, along with trying to make sure our members have opportunities to experience activities they may not be able to otherwise, and trying to do all this with limited resources and financial capabilities. That’s a short answer to the question.

This leads to the point that we as an organization CAN’T function without our members!!! CTO is an organization run by its members and its member’s control where we WILL go in the future. CTO is so grateful for all the donations that we receive throughout the year, BUT WE NEED the membership’s help as well. CTO’s lone major fundraiser is coming up on April 2, 2011 and even if you as a member do not wish to participate as a shooting participant there are so many other ways to help. We will need helpers at many different stations that day, even if it’s just for a few hours. You can also help with the raffle ticket sales. By buying, selling or both, you are helping CTO get the funds that are needed to get the food to feed everyone, the funds to send people to dream hunts, funds for trout in the pond, literally funds for everything we do!!! If every membership sells 1 extra book of raffle tickets than last year, that will fund our entire appreciation banquet to thank the people that help us. So yes consider this a plea from your President to help  YOUR organization provide everything you want, need or maybe haven’t even thought of. Thanks you in advance J

PHEASANT HUNT—SUNDAY MARCH 6, 2011

By:  Larry Zander

Hey! The December Pheasant Hunt was not called off by CTO. Mother Nature did it for us! I was still trying to get out of my driveway at 8:00 A.M. Our events are always rain or shine but this one made it all but impos- sible to move. I am pleased to normally have a direct line to our creator but somehow we got disconnected..

On March 6th I ask that you be at J&H Game Club by 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Should you not have a gun, we can provide. We will supply 20 GA and 12 GA shells should you not have your own. Number 5 and 6 shot is suggested. We do our best to see that each hunter takes home two birds. You are welcome to bring the kids or guests. All eat a buffet lunch at no cost.

Let each of us take time to give a big ―Thank You‖  to the folks at J&H for making this day possible. Also thank our volunteers and dog handlers. We look forward to another day of good companionship.

Be safe—and take care of yourself and those who care for you.

13th ANNUAL CTO SPORTING CLAY BENEFIT SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 2011

BY: Larry Zander

Dear CTO Members:

Soon you will be receiving raffle tickets to buy or sell for this event. We ask that you do all you can and ask us to send you more as this is the day which CTO needs to be as successful as we are. Approximately 90% of all our financial support is earned at this time. We are thankful to each of us who work (some tirelessly) to get this done.

We have been told by those (in the Know) that our CTO shooting event is the biggest one day fundraising shoot in the United States. That in itself has a lot to be said as to who we are. Remember! It is only you who can keep making it possible. BE THERE!! It is imperative that our supporters meet us eye ball to eye- ball and that we thank them for their support.

Those of us who show up to work also will enjoy good food as well as getting to know each other better. No matter what your disability, we will find something for you to do. Just be there! It will make you feel proud to be part of the most successful organization of it’s kind anywhere,

If you have any questions call me (Larry) at (920) 525-5637 or Jean Chapman at (920) 525-1123.

Take care of yourself and those who care for you.

PLEASE COME!!

Our Challenge the Outdoors, Inc Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. We welcome your presence and input.

Challenge The Outdoors Shooting Opportunities

Sporting Clays:

If you are a disabled sportsperson and would like to try your hand at shooting Sporting Clays do we have a deal for you! Every second Tuesday of the month at 11:00 am shooters meet up at J&H Game Farm in Navarino, WI. What you will need to bring is a shotgun, Ear and Eye protection. CTO will pro- vide ammunition and the cost of shooting one round of sporting clays. Due to the extra cost of some shells we are currently only providing 12 and 20 Gauge shells. If you shoot a different Gauge you will be asked to provide your own ammunition. Note: When we shoot Sporting Clays at J&H. most of us come early (around 11:00 am) and enjoy a casual lunch at our own expense from the great J&H menu. We start gathering our equipment and loading up around 12:45 to 1:00 pm for a great afternoon of shooting. It takes each group of shooters about 2 1/2 to 3 hours to finish the course. In the summer months be sure to bring water and skeeter spray!!

We have been asking for the last couple months for your e-mail address so we can e-mail you the news- letter. 15th TROUT—O—RAMA SATURDAY, MAY 21, 2011

By:  Larry Zander, Director

Here we go again! Big—healthy—feisty rainbow trout are not only a gourmet treat but also one hell of a lotta fun to catch. Fishing rules are the same as always:

#1 Up to 5 trout per visit—10 trout monthly total for memberships with disabilities. #2 Up to 3 trout per visit—6 trout monthly for non-handicapped memberships.

PLEASE REMEMBER: FAMILY MEMBERSHIP DOES NOT MEAN ALL MEMBERS GET 5 TROUT EACH!!

There is no size limit and please do not play catch and release (it kills fish).

Your Board of Directors realizes some of our membership like to fish the pond during the week and ac- tually catch fish. Trout population after our Trout-O-Rama is not depleted but hit pretty hard. Your BOD has given me a large enough budget to restock the pond by the first part of June and again for our fall Trout-O-Rama. I ask that you release any crappie, blue gill and perch. If they are hooked deep, please cut the line. The hook will disintegrate within a couple weeks. These fish make lots of babies and the bigger fish have a good habit of eating little fish keeping them fat and sassy. Just the way you like them.

As always, our food guru Karen Baehr will be setting a food display second to none along with whatever

you (the fisherpersons) can bring as a dish to pass. I’m all but sure we’ll have brats and burgers too. Don’t forget the sweet gooey stuff. Above all bring yourself, guests and kids.

By the way, this is the only day of the year where lying about your fishing prowess is allowed and each of us are believers. We look forward to another great day of outdoor fun and good companionship.

Be safe—take care of each other and those who care for you.

POND CLEANUP DAY—VOLUNTEERS NEEDED SATURDAY, April 30, 2011 — 9:00 A.M.

The trout pond really needs attention before our fishing begins. There are a lot of sticks and branches and of course weeds that can make fishing tougher. Come on out this day with rakes and week whack- ers. I’ll throw on some brats with beer, coffee or pop. With a good crew it shouldn’t take more than a

couple hours.

Call Larry at (920) 525-5637 Thank you in advance!

LAKE MICHIGAN FISHING IN LATE JUNE

By Judy Paluch, Director

We will have a 2011 Lake Michigan Fishing Event in late June. I won't know the date until I talk to all the captains. I have room for about 35-37 disabled fishing people going out of Algoma's Har- bor at 3:30 a.m. and Two Rivers' Harbor at 4:30 a.m. We will be fishing for Salmon and Trout till about 10:00-11:00 a.m. The helpers on each boat are the Captain and his First Mate. If we don't need any extra helpers, we will have room for more fishing persons. If you have a special need to have a personal helper, we will work something out. If your helper goes along, that person will have to help the other people on the boat when not helping you.

This year will be our third year and the first two years were wonderful. We do share the fish, be- cause some boats might not get any, and other boats might get their limits. It all depends on the fish and the weather and where you are fishing. We have wonderful captains, and you can ask them any questions that you might have.

Please call me or e-mail me to make a reservation. If you see me at another event and want to go fishing on Lake Michigan in late June, give me a piece of paper with your information on it so I don't forget to register you. I have a short memory and I don't want to forget you. I will notify eve- ryone by email if they are on a boat or a waiting list, and those without e-mail I will notify by phone, so I need all phone numbers that I can reach you at. The places on the boats are on a first come first serve basis, and then we will start a waiting list. I would say the sooner you put in your reservation the more likely you will be on a boat going fishing. I have a list of information that I give you and a map on how to get to your harbor. If you have any other questions or want to make sure I got your reservation, e-mail me or call me. We have many cancellations, so if you are on the waiting list, don't worry you probably will be on the boat. Just make sure to register by June 8th. You can call to see if we have openings after that, but we don't guarantee anything.

My e-mail address is: palj22@att.net and my phone number is 920-336-1934, and I do have a cell number at 920-619-5154 as my backup phone.

Information I need is: Name (print it out), full address (city and state and Zip code), phone number including the area code, if you are in a wheelchair or not, and if you have to have a personal helper.

We will be having a meal after we get off the water. It is all set up; so, if your boat comes in early, the captain will help you get over to the restaurant and you can order your food before we all get back to shore. We do have a special menu that the restaurants have made for us that is delicious.

If you have a problem when you are on shore, check with the person in charge.

Thank you and think" big fish" and "good weather".

The Holiday Party was a Fun Time!

By: Peter Lathrop

The weather was cold, but at least it did not snow this year. I would like to thank Susie Malueg, Judy Paluch, and Patrick Nieuwenhuis for joining me on the main committee. Karen Baehr was a big help with the food and supplies. I would also like to thank Cliff Pheifer, Mary & John Jantz for donating some door prizes. I would also estimate that there were 8 other people that helped with various tasks with the party. The non-perishable food items were taken to the New London food pantry. The employee there was appreciative to receive the food. Jean Chapman and Judy Paluch played as a team and they won the cribbage tournament. There were many bowlers. 96 people attended the party.

3-D ARCHERY SHOOT    APRIL 16, 2011

By:  Mark Baehr

We’ve planned an In-door 3-D archery shoot for Saturday April 16. The location will be R&B Archery (920- 213-4016) located at: W5251 Pleasant Rd. Black Creek, WI R&B is located about 6 miles north of Appleton just east of Cty Hwy A on Pleasant Rd. All CTO members and their family and friends are invited to at- tend. CTO will be picking up the cost of a round on the 3-D range or a round on the target range for our members. We will be running the shoot from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and providing a lunch about 1 p.m. Shooters will be able to shoot at foam bale targets or can choose either to shoot a 10, 20 or 30 target 3-D round with a max range of 44 yards. Last years shoot at R&B went very well and the shooters were very impressed with the ease of getting around the range and the overall excellent accessibility. If you have always wanted to try your hand at archery but don’t have any equipment we will have adaptive equipment on hand including: crossbows with hand cranks, arrows, adaptive shooting chairs and rests. If you have a piece of adaptive equip- ment that you think others could benefit from please bring it along and share your ideas with others. We are discussing the possibility of having prizes along with some friendly competition. More to come about that in the March newsletter. Volunteers will be needed to help others on the range. To get an idea of how much food to prepare we are asking that you please respond to us by April 9th. Contact Mark Baehr at: (920) 766-9218 e-mail at: baehrm@sbcglobal.net or Cliff Pheifer at (715) 412-1707 e-mail at: deb57ncliff55@gmail.com

We look forward to seeing more people attend this year!

We are looking for a few volunteers willing to give a few hours of assistance during the hunt. If you are interested in helping out please contact Mark Baehr at: (920) 766-9218 or e-mail him at baehrm@sbcglobal.net We need help with preparing and serving food and with general cleanup and possibly as an assistant to and as a mentor to the hunters in the field. ATTENTION

CHALLENGE THE OUTDOORS AWARDS PROGRAM

The 5th Annual Awards will be given out at the 2011 CTO summer/fall banquet. Time frame is from July 1, 2010 to July 1, 2011.            This year, the CTO Board of Directors added catfish and white bass to the fishing categories, other than that there were no other major changes. Check the CTO Web site and News Letter for latest hunting and fishing category leaders. http://ctoforme.org/Awards.htm

Procedures, Rules and Details:

All hunting/fishing/shooting categories entrants must have been a CTO DISABLED member before catching, killing or shooting a submittable entry. The definition of a disabled member is as follows: (Holding only a DNR Cross Bow permit is not considered to be ―disabled enough‖ for this awards program.)

1.                  Have a Class A or C hunting permit from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

2.                  Can only ambulate with the use of a wheelchair, walker or two canes or two crutches from a disability considered permanent.

3.                  Is legally blind.

4.                  Is missing a hand or arm regardless of using prosthesis.

5.                  Is over the age of 70 years.

6.                  Other individuals can become qualified on a case-by-case basis. Presently, Pat Nieuwenhuis is a qualified competitor. Contact Awards Administrator.

The CTO Board shall appoint a CTO Board of Director member as ―Award Administrator‖.   In this capacity, this person will oversee tiebreakers, choose award winners in the ―Honor‖ categories and other- wise administer this program.  This person replaces the past ―committee‖ charged with these responsibilities.  This person will not be eligible for winning an ―Honor‖ category, but can win one of the

―Measurement‖ categories if the person meets the disabled definition and is NOT involved in a ―tie‖ determination.

A CTO member can only win one of the hunting/fishing/shooting, (―Measurement Category‖) categories in any one year.

A CTO member can only win a Deepdodo Award twice and Volunteer of the Year Award (―Honor Cate- gory‖) once for the life of this Awards Program. Winners in these categories will have their stories and photos published on our Web Site and other publicity tools such as conference poster boards as is feasible.

Winners in the ―Honor‖ Awards will be notified of their honors a few days before the banquet so they can prepare a brief presentation to the assembly. The reason for this is to strive to show the group what a ―real‖ winner does to gain such high recognition and provide inspiration for others to reach for similar achievements.

Volunteers and others will be encouraged to remind and enter best category entries for disabled members with or without the member’s knowledge. For example, boat captains on the Shawano Lake fishery will be advised to measure and get photos of fish that might be award eligible.

Award Categories:

Biggest Challenge Overcome Outside: One year, a CTO member overcame his quadriplegia to hunt turkeys on his own. He set and reset his blind to get the best spot; he got in the blind and set up and after several exciting close calls was able to bag a turkey. Try and top that one to win. Award = $75 gift certificate to a Sporting Goods Store.

Field Grants Program Guidelines

Challenge the Outdoors, Inc

At the September, 2007 BOD meeting, revisions were discussed and approved for the CTO Field Grant Program. The program is designed to aid physically challenged members of Challenge the Outdoors, Inc to experience once-in-a-lifetime outdoor recreational events that they can not otherwise afford to attend. To be eligible to apply and receive funding under the Field Grant Program, an individual must be a disabled member of Challenge the Outdoors, Inc for at least one calendar year.

These grants (a maximum of $200.00) are not available to non-disabled members of CTO.

A Field Grant will not be awarded to an individual for participation in another organization’s event if CTO already conducts a similar event. The Field Grant Committee and Board of Directors can consider an excep- tion under special circumstances. Persons that have received funds under the CTO Field Grant Program are not be eligible for another Field Grant to participate in the same type of event in the future. For example: A disabled member of Challenge the Outdoors is awarded a Field Grant to hunt Pronghorn in Wyoming. This member may not apply for another Field Grant to hunt pronghorn in the future.

Please contact Director Larry Laehn at 920-757-6099 or at btiwi@netzero.com with questions.

Cost Sharing Program for Adaptive Equipment Catching on

We know adaptive equipment can be a bit pricey so our hope, by creating this cost sharing program in December of 2004, was to help our physically challenged members offset that cost and encourage them to purchase their own equipment. Thus creating more independence for them. So far CTO has helped several members purchase adaptive hunting equipment including crossbows and hand cranks, and an adapted gunstock. We are still waiting for the 1st adaptive fishing equipment request. For those unfamiliar with our cost sharing program here’s how it works. CTO will help our physically challenged members purchase adaptive hunting or fishing equipment by picking up to ½, but not to exceed $100.00, for the cost of the piece(s) of equipment 1 time per year. For example say Jane purchases a crank for her crossbow and it cost $150.00. CTO would reimburse Jane $75.00. To receive reimbursement for a piece of adaptive equipment you have purchased or to see if a piece of equipment you’re considering purchasing qualifies contact Jean or Harland Chapman. (920) 525-1123. *Note, keep your receipt and get a duplicate copy of the original because we will need a copy for our records. And if you return the item please reimburse CTO. If you are looking for sources of adaptive equipment there are hundreds to choose from so shop around and check our website out for links to sellers and suppliers and as always please show patronage to the many businesses that have been so good to us over the years by giving them your and our business. For a list of these businesses contact Larry Zander. Thank you.
