We had a great turn out of members and guests for awards, food, raffles, 50/50 and just visiting. The many donors of the raffles prizes are Clintonville Area Chapter Shadows of the Wolf, Karen Janssen, Bobby & Di Kawa, Gerald Schick, Gary Vanden Heuvel, Dan & Tammy Kritz, Bob Lathrop, The Zarling Family. Special donation for disabled members Wayne & Kathy Schwark. We appreciated all donations given to CTO. Special thanks to anyone who helped in anyway it is very much appreciated by the committee.

Thanks Karen Baehr and Rita Adamovich CTO Board of Directors Election Results At our Membership meeting in July we held an election for our Board of Directors. There were 6 open positions with 5 three-year terms and 1 two-year term. After asking for nominations from the floor 3 times and none being heard the ballots were filled out with 6 members on the ballot, all were elected. Your 3 year term Board of Directors are: Jim Adamovich, Chuck Duffeck, Carl Gierke, Brian Hess & Bobbie Mehlar and agreeing to take the 2 year term Harland Chapman. Thank you and congratulations and best of luck to you all at working together to keep this great organization running and meeting the challenges of the coming year with positive can do attitudes!! There are no problems only solutions!! Thank you to all our members who showed up and voted at the banquet and a special thanks Larry Laehn for running the election. Now, at the August Board of Directors meeting your board will nominate and elect the new Executive Board of Directors including; president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. We also encourage our members to attend the directors meetings and consider getting involved as a committee member and or as an associate director. We have a great working board, that is, most members serve on a committee or two and we need more committee members to help out in numerous areas. Whether it’s a hunting event like deer hunting or serving on our food committee, fishing, etc we definitely have a need for your helping hands and minds no matter what your abilities are. We hope some of you seriously consider serving on a committee and getting more involved in your organization and helping carrying on our great mission of serving the needs and desires of physically challenged sportspersons! It’s a great mission and worthy of your time and efforts! Your fellow members and those that we serve will greatly appreciate your efforts. Contact any director with questions you may have about how to get more involved. Thank you :o) Special Thank You! Special thanks to Gary Vanden Heuvel for the trailer and the cost of the print design (which was completed by Brian Hess, a CTO disabled member.) Gary has also donated cooking equipment, hunting blinds, large table, many ducks Unlimited picture and raffle prizes for the fundraiser. Your donation is very much appreciated by CTO.

Community Support Report 2013-2014 saw a few very good results from our Community Support Committee. We continued our efforts in awarding scholarships and awarded 2 this year. Our thanks to the Scholarship committee for really taking this task to heart and selecting 2 great kids from our area. We wish the students the best and hope they also have the time in-between studying and work to take part in some of CTO’s events. Congratulations!! We also donated to Youth & Ladies Day of Instruction at J&H, held each 2nd Saturday in September. We purchase the trout for the trout pond there and also supply many volunteers to help kids and ladies catch them and then clean them. This event helps get the word out about our organization and shows that disabled folks can do a lot more than many assume we can do. We hope to see some of our disabled youth & ladies out at J&H taking part in the many opportunities provided for them. We had no projects funded this past fiscal year but are still looking to continue to support projects that will help get physically challenged people out in the outdoors. So, if you have a project in your neighborhood that you think has merit please con-tact our projects committee member Mark Baehr at: (920) 766-9218 email at: baehrm@sbcglobal.net We are also contacting local school districts about the opportunity to have a day of outdoor fun including fishing, games, picnicking etc. We hope to have an event set up for later this year or by late spring or early summer next year. We are also working on having an outing for our disabled veterans and wounded warriors. Keep an eye on our upcoming newsletters for what we’ve come up with and of course if you want to get involved with the committee and or have any ideas on what, where or how we can serve the needs of the kids and adults with disabilities in our communities please let us know. Your thoughts are always welcome :o) Thank you!

Waterfowl Hunt Coming Soon! We didn’t have a waterfowl hunt last year but that will hopefully change this year! We have a committee formed, Carl Gierke, Mark Baehr and Keith Pamperin. They are taking on the task of setting up the hunt and are well on their way to getting a hunt put together! So far Carl and Mark have met with a landowner who has a very nice property that should offer a great opportunity for a few hunters to get out in the field this fall. The landowner, CTO member Todd Close, likes the idea of helping get some disabled hunters out and has a couple small ponds on his property just north of New London that should offer a great opportunity for some duck and goose hunting. Todd gave us a tour of his property and we discussed some possible hunt dates and thoughts on where to set-up blinds and how to get hunters into them and what it will take to make it all happen. There is not a lot of room for a lot of hunters but we should be able to get 3-4 hunters on the property. With limited spots available we will come up with a fair process in determining which hunters get 1st shot at available spots much like what we do for our other events/outings i.e. salmon fishing & turkey hunting. No dates are set as of yet as we are looking at the new earlier duck season opener and the early goose hunt and will form a plan including some dates and possibly another property or two to get more hunters out on this fall. We like the idea of having a few properties to hunt on but that will only happen if we can get the necessary support to get everything set up. We will need volunteers to help get people in and out of the blinds, setting up blinds, putting out decoys, calling, and hopefully retrieving waterfowl. That’s where you can help out! If you are interested in hunting and or volunteering, have an ATV and or small trailer, and or have some land that you can open up for a hunt please contact either Carl at (920) 986-3272 or Mark at: (920) 766-9218 email: baehrm@sbcglobal.net We look forward to getting this waterfowl hunt up and running and with a little support we know it will be a great outing for all involved!

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BOARD MEETINGS OF JUNE AND JULY 2014 By Judy Paluch & Peter Lathrop

JUNE 17, 2014 At our trout pond outing, Peter Provenzale went to pick up his fish after they were cleaned, and the fish were gone. Cliff is checking into how to remedy the situation for now and in the future. Bill Mayville is working on the upcoming disabled deer hunt in October. He needs more volun-teers to help with this hunt. Other activities also need more volunteers to make our events run smooth and are enjoyable for all. Both able-bodied and disabled persons can help. Many of our disabled members and their husband or wives are already some of our wonderful volunteers. If interested, just ask and any type of help is welcome. Bill Mayville said that the problems with our motor on the pontoon are caused when people run the motor out of gas and then hookup another gas tank, but then they don’t refill the oil reservoir. The motor is a 2-cycle motor with oil injection and needs this to be done or problems and damage can occur. Gary Vanden Heuvel donated a large list of items from a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization that broke up to which he belonged. Among the wonderful items, we received was an enclosed trailer; and Gary paid to have our new logo put on it. These many items will help our organization greatly. All the transfer donation information is being worked out.

JULY 15, 2014 While taking pictures of our fish at the Lake Michigan Salmon Fishing Event in Algoma, the wife of “The County Times” (the local newspaper) came up, and asked for information about our organization. They wanted to do a story on Challenge The Outdoors, Inc. I sent her pictures, our brochure and my phone number. All the publicity we get the more people we can help. A lady from TravelWisconsin.com asked Peter some questions about Challenge The Outdoors, Inc. To read the info about CTO go to www.travelwisconsin.com/media-press and then click: An All-Access Pass to Wisconsin: Enjoying the Great Outdoors the Accessible Way Bill Mayville asked if we can use pictures of our members in advertising for CTO. I said yes, be-cause we have a piece on our application that says that there will be pictures taken at events; and they would be used for Challenge The Outdoors, Inc. advertising only. The “Camp Shioc Picnic and Camp Fire--Get Together” will be held on September 13. More information will be in our newsletter, read your newsletters!!

ALWAYS CLIMB HIGHER Jeff Pagels (a CTO member) has written his autobiography and it has been published in paperback form. It is a “STORY OF THE COMEBACK FROM A DEVASTATING SPINAL CORD INJURY IN 1984 TO JEFF PAGELS AND HOW HE CAME BACK TO BE THE FASTEST USA NORDIC DISABLED SKIER IN THE WORLD AND THEN ABANDONED COMPETITION AGAINST OTHERS TO JUST COMPETE WITH HIMSELF BY CLIMBING MOUNTAINS AND OTHER EXTREME OUTDOOR PURSUITS” I started reading this book and couldn’t put it down until it was time to start this newsletter. After reading what I have, I realized that so many of us that are disabled (or nondisabled) have not begun to achieve what we could do if the dream to “Climb Higher” was with us. If you are interested there are several ways to get Jeff’s book. If is available on Amazon, elec-tronically on Kindle, or from Jeff (he will autograph a copy for you). It sells for $16.00 and Jeff can be reached at 920-336-5731 or e-mail jcpagels@att.net Jean Chapman,

DISABLED MEN AND WOMEN ENJOY SALMON FISHING ON LAKE MICHIGAN

We started out on July 12 at 4:00 a.m. at Algoma and 4:30 a.m. at Two Rivers for a 1/2 day of Salmon fishing At each Marina we had five boats; and as soon as everyone had boarded their assigned boat, they were on their way out to Lake Michigan to fish. The waves were a bit rough, but off we went. We were out about 7 miles and before we were all set up, we had a hit. It was a beautiful King Salmon. For about 4 hours, the fishing was fairly steady on many boats. About 8:30 a.m. the fish quit biting. Since we had pictures to take and the captains had fish to clean, we headed in. After all the fish were taken care of, all of us headed over to the Caffe Tlazo for lunch and in Two Rivers our people ate at M&M Lunch and Catering for lunch. We want to thank both restaurants for the delicious food that they prepared for us. Between our five boats at Algoma, we caught 45 fish and the five boats at Two Rivers caught 16 fish. The fish were mostly King Salmon and some Rainbow Trout (Steel Heads.) We all share our fish among our people that fished with us, so every person gets some fish. Challenge The Outdoors would like to thank Algoma and Two River Captains and First Mates for the wonderful job they did. We appreciate all the personal help you gave us. In Algoma: Brian Frerk on the Drill Sergeant Jeff Harkins on the Catch 22 Ryan Peters on the Fly Catcher Jimmie Sullivan on his two boats from The Fishin’ Magician Charters Kevin Naze for all the wonderful help he did to assist our fishing people – Wild Times In Two Rivers Dale Laurin with the Fish-Hook Charters Rich Klochenga on the Loner Roger Meyers on The Toybox Steve Bergner on The Rainbow Chaser Rob Steber on the Karen Marie. Thanks to Gerry Schick for the trophies of fish on a plaque that he made. He donated two of them to the Salmon Fishing Event for this year.

Wisconsin Waterfowl Association Abrams Property Waterfowl Hunting Opportunity and much more!! In 2011 & 2012 CTO made significant donations towards an ambitious project that was supported by many entities including, Wisconsin Waterfowl Association, WDNR, Fox Valley Technical College Natural Resources Program, Red’s Excavating, Wisconsin Building Supply, Delta Waterfowl, and many more local partners who all provided needed funding, resources and services. This project has been completed in several phases and is now open to the public for multiple uses including, hunting, sightseeing, hiking and more. Of special interest to our members are the two wheelchair accessible waterfowl hunting blinds. The property is located about 15 minutes north of Green Bay just east of the split of Hwy 41 and 141. It totals 152 acres consisting of ponds, upland grassland/prairies, and mature woodlands. There are trails throughout the property and more work is being scheduled to help make it more accessible to the public. If you are considering a place to waterfowl hunt this place may be a great place to explore. Two people who have experience here are CTO Board of Directors member Keith Pamperin and former Board of Directors member Jeff Pagels. They are available to talk to regarding the property and can answer some questions you may have. Please call Keith at: (920) 494-3990 and Jeff at: (920) 366-5731. To read more on this great project and the opportunities available here checkout this website link. http://www.wisducks.org/wwas-abrams-property-press-release.html Good Luck and please share your experiences while there on our chat group or write an article for our newsletter.
