A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SERVING THE RECREATIONAL NEEDS AND DESIRES OF THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SPORTSPERSON

President's Report - Keith Pamperin

As President of CTO I am asked to share feelings, attitude and sometimes even words of wisdom in each newsletter sent to the membership.

As I near the end of my first year as President, I hope that I have been able to share my feelings, and provide leadership that allows each of you as members to participate and feel welcome. It is you, our members that are the strength of Challenge the Outdoors. Yes, our goal is to challenge ourselves by participating in CTO fishing, hunting, shooting, bowling, and social events, but some of the true challenges come in the process of working together planning, coordinating, implementing, and enjoying the events sponsored by CTO.

It was with great pleasure that I watched at our 2013 Annual Meeting as our volunteer officers and committee chairs gave their reports of the many varied events and programs sponsored by CTO over the past year. Each event requires countless volunteer hours of planning, coordination and leadership to provide an enjoyable experience for CTO members. Each one of us owns a stake in what CTO is and becomes. To sustain this greatness is going to take more than just belonging. We need you to help, we welcome everyone’s participation.

At this year’s Annual Banquet Challenge the Outdoors Inc. received the most generous donation ever, in the form of a check for $30,000. from fellow CTO member Steve Nooyan and his company Home Instead, Senior Care. I have known Steve for a number of years and I know he could have selected any number of needy charitable organizations for this donation. Steve selected Challenge the Outdoors Inc., because he personally loves the challenges of our great Wisconsin outdoors, and he wants to see persons with disabilities accept the challenges of enjoying outdoor sports. Steve will be participating with the Board of Directors in determining how his donation can elevate CTO’s ability to achieve its mission. We are grateful to Steve for his generosity, and welcome his participation. THANK YOU Steve Nooyan and Home Instead Senior Care.

I look forward to a New Year of success and growth for Challenge the Outdoors Inc.

J&H GAME FARM ANNUAL YOUTH AND LADIES DAY CTO VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO MANAGE TROUT POND SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2013

We need CTO Members to volunteer to help manage the trout pond and clean trout at this event. For quite a few years now, CTO has funded and managed this trout pond to give back to the community and J&H for all the things done to make CTO a prosperous organization. Both able and disabled mem- bers are needed to help the ladies and youngsters bait hooks, net fish, clean and package the fish and otherwise help out.

Plan to be at J&H by 8:00 am or if not that early anytime to jump in and help out. It would be nice to 15-20 helpers on hand.

Remember this adage: “If you think it’s fun to catch a fish, just wait until you help someone else catch a fish!”

If you have any questions, please contact Cliff Pheifer at 715-412-1767 or deb57ncliff55@gmail.com or Diane Redmann at 715-758-8134 or jhclub@ezwebtech.com (See poster in newsletter.)

HELP PLEASE— We have a need for more fish cleaners. Please let Cliff know if you can help for all or part of the day. Much appreciated.

6TH ANNUAL CHALLENGE THE OUTDOORS MUSKIE HUNTING/FISHING EVENT

Monday, September 9, 2013

By: Tom Gagnon, CTO Muskie Event Manager

Last year, our 5th annual event did prove to be the charmed year for a CTO member to finally catch a Muskie. Low Pressure, low winds and clouds clicked for two CTO members to catch, land and release big muskie. As was the case last year, we hope to capitalize on past knowledge & local musky club fishing guides to enhance our chances of bagging more big ones. The day will start officially at 8:00 am for those selected to fish. As with any CTO event, we can always use volunteers to help us get CTO members in and out of boats.

Our headquarters will be the same as last year at the Green Boat Landing on the east side of the Fox River at the mouth of the Fox River in Green Bay. Look for the blue and white CTO event signs.

Last year we had room for 11 members to fish. As with most CTO events, priority will be given to those who have not had a chance to muskie fish with us in past years.

Please contact me, Tom Gagnon at tom.ilbcnu@gmail.com or 920-373-3796. When you contact me back, please give me your phone number & email address. Depending on conditions, we should be heading back to shore by 11:30, if the conditions are poor, we might stop early and if conditions are fantastic...lunch (free) can wait awhile. All for now, but you might see some email updates if deemed needed.

Fish- ing will start at 9:00 am, at Wilderness Springs Trout Farm. Please bring your fishing poles, secret lures, and dish to pass for lunch. Cane poles, bait, cleaning, and packing on ice will be provided. Contact Cliff Pheifer at (715) 412 1707 or e-mail at: deb57ncliff55@gmail.com

CTO ANNUAL “SHOOT TIL YOU DROP” EVENT TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2013

9:00 AM TO 4:00 PM @ J&H GAME FARM

Hard to believe another year has gone by, but it’s time again for the CTO Annual Fall “Shoot ‘Til You Drop” event at J&H Game Farm. CTO will pick up the cost of the clay birds and ammunition for this all day event. You can choose from the traditional sporting clays courses, wobble flurry, skeet, and 5-stand events. You can try to reach each event or just concentrate on one area of expertise. Last year we tried a “Buddy Backup” game at 5-Stand and had a lot of fun.

The noon lunch will feature a fish fry, with fish provided by Steve Redmann and Jeff Pagels. Everyone attending is asked to bring a dish to pass. Chips, beans, potato salad, bread, and of course desserts are always welcome. Volunteers who attend and assist the disabled shooters will also be able to shoot as much as they want.

Pre-sign up is encouraged, but I want to remind everyone that it is your responsibility to sign in at the shoot as well for each round and type of shoot you do. If you have questions, or need a suggestion on what to bring, contact event manager, Steve Kettenhoven at 715-250-0077 or email at steve.kettenhoven@gmail.com

END OF YEAR PHEASANT HUNT

J & H Game Farm

Sunday October 27, 2013 - 8:00 AM - ?

Due to inclement weather we’ve had at this event over the past few years, we’ve decided to try this year’s event in October. For those of you that may be new to this event, this hunt has it all including dogs and handlers, transporting machines, great food, plenty of birds, and lots of fun for everyone. Each hunter is welcome to bring family members or a friend to assist them, but only the disabled CTO member is allowed to shoot. If you don’t have your own gun, there will be guns available at the clubhouse. This is another free event sponsored by Challenge the Outdoors and we hope to see you all there. And you don’t have to worry about missing the Packer game that Sunday because they are playing the Sunday Night Game at 7:30 pm.

Please contact me if you are going to be part of the hunt and if there will be any companions that will be joining you. My contact info is: steve.kettenhoven@gmail.com or 715-250-0077.

2013 CTO Pontoon Boat Season on Shawano Lake

The CTO Pontoon Boat, the “Challenger” is back on the water at S&S Marina on the west end of the lake for the summer season. Procedures will be the same as the last three years. (See our WEB site for the Challenger Operations Manual; click on Fishing. For all our E-letter recipients click here http://ctoforme.org/p_df/Pontoon_2012_rules.pdf This year as in last the outdoor privy will not be available. Once again, Gary Thyes will manage the Challenger including reservations, boat use training and is also available to drive the boat for lake tours if you ask him nicely. Gary can be reached at either 715-584-7700 or email him at garythyes@yahoo.com Reservations will normally be made in half day increments on weekends to give more members a chance to use the Challenger. We ask you to please use caution and stay to safe areas and avoid weed patches & sandbars which can be challenging on Shawano Lake but is doable. We have had a couple instances where boat users were stuck in weed patches the last 2 years and ended up causing damage to the motor and we want to prevent that from happening again. Please get familiar with the lake by looking at and using the map for safe navigation. We are also aware that members often times want to go fishing but are unable to go because they or we are unable to get captains and 1st mates. We are trying to and have found a few people very interested to help fill this need but are looking for a few more. So…if you would like to captain or be a 1st mate please contact Gary Thyes and he will be happy to take your contact information on dates and times when you are available to help out.

We look forward to a great season of fishing & boating and we hope you get a chance to enjoy this great opportunity too!

If any of our members would like to take a ride around Shawano Lake (not fishing) on the Challenger, call Gary Thyes at 715-584-7700 and he will make arrangements for you.

Please keep in mind that the pontoon has to be off the lake by September 30, 2013!!!

Cost Sharing Program for Adaptive Equipment

We know adaptive equipment can be a bit pricey so our hope, by creating this cost sharing pro- gram in December of 2004, was to help our physically challenged members offset that cost and encourage them to purchase their own equipment. Thus creating more independence for them. So far CTO has helped several members purchase adaptive hunting equipment including crossbows and hand cranks, and an adapted gunstock. We are still waiting for the 1st adaptive fishing equip- ment request. For those unfamiliar with our cost sharing program here’s how it works. CTO will help our physically challenged members purchase adaptive hunting or fishing equipment by picking up to ½, but not to exceed $100.00, for the cost of the piece(s) of equipment 1 time per year. For example say Jane purchases a crank for her crossbow and it cost $150.00. CTO would reimburse Jane $75.00. To receive reimbursement for a piece of adaptive equipment you have purchased or to see if a piece of equipment you’re considering purchasing qualifies contact Jean or Harland Chapman. *Note, keep your receipt and get a duplicate copy of the original because we will need a copy for our records. And if you return the item please reimburse CTO. If you are looking for sources of adaptive equipment there are hundreds to choose from so shop around and check our website out for links to sellers and suppliers and as always please show patronage to the many businesses that have been so good to us over the years by giving them your and our business.

FISHING ON LAKE MICHIGAN

By Judy Paluch

On Monday-- July 1, Challenge The Outdoors boarded 21 disabled fishing people to fish for King Salmon. We had two harbors, Two Rivers leaving at 4:30 a.m. on four boats, and Algoma leaving at 4:00 a.m. on six boats.

Looking out across the lake we could see waves of only a foot or so, but we were still in the marina. That should be no problem, and the sun was showing a golden glow along the horizon with a fairly clear looking sky.

With all boarded, we headed out for a morning of fun fishing, Just a few moments after all the lines were down, a strike and our first fish is on, It was quickly handed of and away we went. The next two hours there were just a few strikes; then, our captain started changing lures and depth changing for those elusive fish.

Finally, we get our next strike and a second strike. Unfortunately, one of the fish got off, but the one that stayed on was a King Salmon. It gave quite a fight and measured 33 and ½ inches. During the rest of the morning, we caught 3 more; and one was another 33 and ½ inches. It was spotty fishing until 9 a.m. when we headed in and the waves were up to about 4 feet. We caught five fish and split some of them up among others who didn’t have as much. Two Rivers had about the same type of fishing we did, but they caught more Lakers.

All together both harbors caught 29 fish, but there also were those that didn’t stay on the line long enough to make it into the boat. Everyone that Wayne and I talked to did have a great time, and also shared the fish so all had plenty for a few meals.

After picture taking and cleaning up of the fish, all fishing people, our captains and first mates headed to the restaurants and had a very delicious brunch.

Two Rivers went to M&M Lunch and Algoma went to Caffe’Tlazo. There was a lot of comparing fishing going on between mouthfuls of delicious food.

At Algoma, Keith Pamperin caught a 38 ½ inch King Salmon, and Tommy Narmore caught a 37 ½ inch King Salmon. At Two Rivers, Scott Unverrivch caught a 28 inch Rainbow Trout and Don Johnson caught a 32 Inch Lake Trout. Many others caught nice fish, but these were the biggest.

We want to thank all our boat captains and crew for giving our disabled people such a wonderful time, and for the great help they gave to make it easier for us to catch those big and fun fish.

Please Help

To All Challenge the Outdoors Inc. Members

Hello Everyone, I could use the help from all the CTO members for a project that I have been work- ing on now for the past 4 years with the help from family, friends and neighbor. That is collecting used MEDICATION BOTTLES. If you would please save all your used medication bottles for me. These are the kind that you can see through, the amber colored, blue, yellow, green, but not the white colored bottles that you can now see through.  Please save these and give them to Pat Nieuwenhuis or any of the CTO Directors at any of the CTO events and they can get them to me at CTO,s monthly Directors Meeting. I thank you for your help, these bottles will help a lot of poor people get their medication that would otherwise just go to waste because of the cost of a 5 cent bottle.

Thank You Be Safe, Have Fun and God Bless Pat Nieuwenhuis 920-687-8707

Haven of Hope Goes fishing with CTO

On August 13, 2013 about 30 challenged children and adults of all ages went to Memorial Park in Appleton to enjoy the morning playing on the Universal Playground and to do a little fishing on the pond, they were greeted by 11 ready, willing and able CTO volunteers equipped with fishing gear and plenty of bait. By 10:30 we were all helping the 1st group of challenged kids and adults fish while the rest played. Carl Gierke had chummed the edge of the pond a little while earlier with sweet corn in hopes of attracting some hungry carp. While it was a decent weather day it was a challenge to get bites at first and it wasn’t from lack of effort, just a slow morning bite. There were several bluegill and carp caught and everyone was happy to enjoy the morning outdoors. Our thanks goes to all the people who came out to the park and volunteered their time including all the great people from Haven of Hope Day Care from Little Chute and the following CTO members; Jim & Rita Adamovich, Mark Baehr, Harland Chapman, Carl Gierke, Patrick Nieuwenhuis, Johnny, John & Angie Kempen, Jan Mau, and Myron Renier. We hope the participants from Haven of Hope took hope some great memories, I know we did!

Starting in early September, we will be once again be needing help with inspection and repairing blinds, setting them out and taking them down after the hunt. Volunteers are also always welcome and needed to assist with the actual hunt. Help is needed with getting some of our hunters in and out of their blinds or possibly even sitting with them once you get there, helping to take aim, tracking the deer, field dressing, dragging, hauling – you get the picture……. We have had great helpers in the past. Remember, we can’t pull this off without you. Please call Patrick Nieuwenhuis (above) if you can help in any way. For those of you who would rather stay indoors, Karen Baehr (920-766-9218) and her crew can always use help preparing all the great food they serve us down at the Lessor Town Hall.

If you are willing to help, we’ll sure try to find something for you to do.

CTO Shooting Program 2013, Steve Kettenhoven

The CTO Shooting Program has had another very successful year. Starting with the trap teams at Brown County Sportsman’s Club in Green Bay, the success and popularity of the trap league has grown and we now have 10 CTO members shooting on two teams…the original Sittin’ Ducks and a new team called Trigger Happy. We have been featured on WBAY Channel 2, Fox 11’s Good Day Wisconsin, and YouTube. The Sittin’ Ducks just finished in first place for the 15 week Summer League and Trigger Happy was just a few points behind. I think this is a big plus for CTO as it not only integrates disabled with able-bodied in what most would consider a stand up sport, but it also shows we can compete and be successful.

We also have two other CTO members who are competing in a sporting clays league at Triple J in Brillion and we wish them the best of luck as well.

The once-a-month Tuesday sporting clay shoot at J&H Game Farm in Navarino is also very popu- lar and provides CTO members another opportunity to get together and enjoy a great sport. If there are any other members that would like to try trap, sporting clays, or even skeet, please feel free to give me a call or send me an email and we can discuss any details. Contact: steve.kettenhoven@gmail.com or 715-250-0077.

Also CTO sponsors and funds a Shoot Til you Drop event each fall in September—Details are on Page 5 of this newsletter.

The Music in the Seymour Park is always in the summer. The car races at WIR are in August. Watch for details in the newsletter. Thank you to the people who help with these events!
