A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SERVING THE RECREATIONAL NEEDS AND DESIRES OF THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SPORTSPERSON

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE —Steve Lang

As we go through the holiday season, it makes me think all about the things that I am thankful for. I have family, health, and all the friends and support anyone could want in Challenge the Outdoors, Inc. This organization has allowed me, and many of you reading this, to do activities that were thought to be unattainable. Whether it has been fishing and hunting, or baseball and get-togethers, CTO has always been able to provide a relaxed, fun, and enjoyable atmosphere. Every event I go to, I see smiling faces and new members everywhere. We are expanding our membership every day, month and year. This is great for us as an organization. We have helped so many already, but there are so many more to help to enjoy our great outdoors. So next time you are at a CTO event and see somebody new, welcome them in and say ―hi‖. Let’s remember, we were all in that position at one time as well. Or next time you are out on the town, let someone know about CTO and let’s welcome another new member into our great organization.

Let us also be thankful this holiday season for all the gifts and donations that help CTO to run as an organization. Without these, CTO wouldn’t be able to function as an organization. So let’s keep in mind that our major fundraiser is just around the corner and we will be searching for donations, big and small, to help make this year’s another huge success. Take care and HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE!!!!!!

13th ANNUAL CTO SPORTING CLAY BENEFIT

BY: LARRY ZANDER

YES!! I, too, get aggravated with myself when I find I sometimes take too much for granted. Like, Challenge the Outdoors will always be the best of it’s kind anywhere in the US regardless of how it operates. That is stinken—thinken. It takes a tremendous amount of effort and time to make good things happen and it all starts with you and me!!

Approximately 95% of our funds come from the one time per year event. So, each of us must do all we are able to keep this event even more successful each year. We are fortunate and grateful for the support we re- ceive from the community at large and one of the best ways to thank them is to be there in person. Thanking them for their support eye ball to eye ball.

Each of us will be receiving raffle tickets to either buy or sell. For goodness sake do all you can to make use of them and ask for more. For most of us just being at the event is a joy. For those who want to shoot the course and be included in door prizes; you may want to do it on a less crowded day. You may pay your entry fee and shoot any day of the week before. Turn in your score sheet at the front desk. You will be included in the door prize drawings and the Lewis Class.

WE NEED YOU to go to any merchant you can find to acquire door and raffle prizes. Raffle donation letters will be available at the Holiday Party or you may call Jean at 920-525-1123 and they will be sent to you.

Names of  all donors are published at the event.  Almost all businesses are willing if you just ask.

If you need encouragement or have any questions, call me Larry  at 920-525-5637.

Remember you are CTO.

Challenge The Outdoors Shooting Opportunities

Sporting Clays:

If you are a disabled sportsperson and would like to try your hand at shooting Sporting Clays do we have a deal for you! Every second Tuesday of the month at 11:00 am shooters meet up at J&H Game Farm in Navarino, WI. What you will need to bring is a shotgun, Ear and Eye protection. CTO will pro- vide ammunition and the cost of shooting one round of sporting clays. Due to the extra cost of some shells we are currently only providing 12 and 20 Gauge shells. If you shoot a different Gauge you will be asked to provide your own ammunition. Note: When we shoot Sporting Clays at J&H. most of us come early (around 11:00 am) and enjoy a casual lunch at our own expense from the great J&H menu. We start gathering our equipment and loading up around 12:45 to 1:00 pm for a great afternoon of shooting. It takes each group of shooters about 2 1/2 to 3 hours to finish the course. In the summer months be sure to bring water and skeeter spray!!

Trap or Skeet Organized League Shooting Teams.

NEWSLETTERS BY REGULAR MAIL OR BY E-MAIL

We are finding that many of our members and friends are not getting their newsletter within a reasonable amount of time or not at all. This is very frustrating because some people miss coming to some of our events, and important information is delayed.

The amount of money we have to pay sending out the newsletter is getting quite high. Also the price of toner for the copier, copy paper, address label stickers, and the special sealing stickers required by the post office per newsletter is getting quite pricey too. We decided to send out our newsletters by e-mail to those who would like it sent that way, and we will still be sending out our newsletters to those who don't have a computer with an e-mail provider.

Those who are interested in having their newsletter by e-mail and will have it within a day or so, please e-mail Jean Chapman a note that you want e-mail newsletters, and give her your e-mail. Be sure to look it over to make sure it is right. Her e-mail is ...chapjean1@yahoo.com We also will have a newsletter on our web site, but this will be a little later than the e-mail sent out to you. We are hoping this will help get the news out to you sooner and help save us some money.

3-D ARCHERY SHOOT   APRIL 16, 2011

By:  Mark Baehr

We’ve planned an In-door 3-D archery shoot for Saturday April 16. The location will be R&B Archery (920- 213-4016) located at: W5251 Pleasant Rd. Black Creek, WI R&B is located about 6 miles north of Appleton just east of Cty Hwy A on Pleasant Rd. All CTO members and their family and friends are invited to attend. CTO will be picking up the cost of a round on the 3-D range or a round on the target range for our members. We will be running the shoot from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and providing a lunch about 1 p.m. Shooters will be able to shoot at foam bale targets or can choose either to shoot a 10, 20 or 30 target 3-D round with a max range of 44 yards. Last years shoot at R&B went very well and the shooters were very impressed with the ease of getting around the range and the overall excellent accessibility. If you have always wanted to try your hand at archery but don’t have any equipment we will have adaptive equipment on hand including: crossbows with hand cranks, arrows, adaptive shooting chairs and rests. If you have a piece of adaptive equipment that you think others could benefit from please bring it along and share your ideas with others. We are discussing the possibility of having prizes along with some friendly competition. More to come about that in the March newsletter. Volunteers will be needed to help others on the range. To get an idea of how much food to prepare we are asking that you please respond to us by April 9th. Contact Mark Baehr at: (920) 766-9218 e-mail at: baehrm@sbcglobal.net We look forward to seeing more people attend this year!

2011 Spring Turkey Hunt Update

BY:  MARK BAEHR

This years Spring Wild Turkey Hunt planning is coming along. The hunt will take place May 14 & 15, the weekend of 5th week of the Wild Turkey season in zone 3. So far we have 8 hunters signed up. They are; Harland Chapman, Len Colegrove, Ken Gorecki, John Kempen, Roger W. Mateer, Judy Paluch, Mike Safcik & Kaley Wockenfuss. If you think your name should be on this list but isn’t give Mark Baehr a call so we can get you in the hunt. Like last year we will be letting the mentors and hunters work out the details of their hunt and we will be there to offer assistance if need be. We will keep in contact to ensure there are no problems going unresolved. Lodging has been reserved again this year. We are looking for a few volunteers willing to give a few hours of assistance during the hunt. If you are interested in helping out please contact Mark Baehr at: (920) 766-9218 or e-mail him at baehrm@sbcglobal.net We need help with preparing and serving food and with general cleanup and possibly as an assistant to and as a mentor to the hunters in the field. We are also looking for more hunting land so if you or a family friend have land within 20 – 30 miles of Clintonville and are willing to let a disabled hunter on it please contact Mark. More details on the hunt coming in March.

2011 AWARDS

Deer hunters—get your pictures, measurements, etc entered for the awards. Fishermen—ice fishing has started so be sure to enter your big fish.

Watch for more details on all categories in the March newsletter. Any questions you may contact Jeff Pagels at 920-366-5731/

PHEASANT HUNT

What a lousy day the 12th of December was. Due to the storm we were unable to hold this event. Just remember that there will be another one in March so watch for information in the next newsletter.

ATTENTION

If you have a change of address please notify CTO. Reason: for every change of address the post office charges us $.50 to get the new one. Also with so many dropping their inline phone numbers and going with cell phones it would be a great help if you could let us know what the new one is (we can’t get it from information!!!).

NEW MEMBERS NOV—DEC 2010 KYLE NEITZEL

Field Grants Program Guidelines

Challenge the Outdoors, Inc

At the September, 2007 BOD meeting, revisions were discussed and approved for the CTO Field Grant Program. The program is designed to aid physically challenged members of Challenge the Outdoors, Inc to experience once-in-a-lifetime outdoor recreational events that they can not otherwise afford to attend. To be eligible to apply and receive funding under the Field Grant Program, an individual must be a disabled member of Challenge the Outdoors, Inc for at least one calendar year.

These grants (a maximum of $200.00) are not available to non-disabled members of CTO.

A Field Grant will not be awarded to an individual for participation in another organization’s event if CTO already conducts a similar event. The Field Grant Committee and Board of Directors can consider an exception under special circumstances. Persons that have received funds under the CTO Field Grant Program are not be eligible for another Field Grant to participate in the same type of event in the future. For example: A disabled member of Challenge the Outdoors is awarded a Field Grant to hunt Pronghorn in Wyoming. This member may not apply for another Field Grant to hunt pronghorn in the future.

Please contact Director Larry Laehn at 920-757-6099 or at btiwi@netzero.com with questions.

COST SHARING PROGRAM FOR ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT CATCHING ON

We know adaptive equipment can be a bit pricey so our hope, by creating this cost sharing program in December of 2004, was to help our physically challenged members offset that cost and encourage them to purchase their own equipment. Thus creating more independence for them. So far CTO has helped several members purchase adaptive hunting equipment including crossbows and hand cranks, and an adapted gunstock. We are still waiting for the 1st adaptive fishing equipment request. For those unfamiliar with our cost sharing program here’s how it works.

CTO will help our physically challenged members purchase adaptive hunting or fishing equipment by picking up to ½, but not to exceed $100.00, for the cost of the piece(s) of equip- ment 1 time per year. For example say Jane purchases a crank for her crossbow and it cost $150.00. CTO would reimburse Jane $75.00. To receive reimbursement for a piece of adaptive equipment you have pur- chased or to see if a piece of equipment you’re considering purchasing qualifies contact Jean or Harland Chapman. (920) 525-1123.

*Note, keep your receipt and get a duplicate copy of the original because we will need a copy for our records. And if you return the item please reimburse CTO. If you are looking for sources of adaptive equipment there are hundreds to choose from so shop around and check our website out for links to sellers and suppliers and as always please show patronage to the many businesses that have been so good to us over the years by giving them your and our business. For a list of these businesses contact Larry Zander. Thank you.
