C h a l l e n g e T h e O u t d o o r s , I n c .

A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SERVING THE RECREATIONAL NEEDS AND DESIRES OF THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SPORTSPERSON

Our Challenge the Outdoors, 15th Annual Sporting Clays Fund Raiser was not a record breaker but certainly was a success! Our Lord decided to throw some Challenges our way, but true to our name Challenge the Out- doors members and supporters accepted some precipitation and braved quite cool winds to make this years fund raiser a success. For the second year in a row we had fewer Sporting Clays Shooters, mostly due to the weather, but all that participated enjoyed some competitive shooting, great food and enjoyed a good time.with good friends.

This Sporting Clays Shoot, CTO's only major fund raising event takes a lot of planning and hard work, and would not be possible with out the dedication and commitment of our volunteers. For fifteen years this event has been planned and coordinated by our steady Treasurer, Jean Chapman and her loving (sometimes frus- trated) husband Harland. CTO owes Jean and Harland our heartfelt thanks for there many years of guidance and Leadership. Jean told me she thought we had the best turnout of volunteers on Saturday for the sporting Clays Fund Raiser of any year to date. Way to go guys!

I want to thank all the volunteers for their efforts to make this Fund Raiser a success. Without them it would not happen, and without this fund raiser, CTO could continue to provide the many outdoor sporting and social events for our disabled members, wounded warriors and paralyzed veterans. Be sides the volunteers that worked on Saturday there were many hours of volunteer effort that occurred in the planning, printing, prep of labels and mailing, solicitation and collection of raffle prizes, door prizes, selling of raffle tickets, set up of the canopy, tables, signs and operations. And we can't for get our great cooks, and the delicious meal they put on for all of us. Simply the best Boo Yah I ever enjoyed.

I am purposely not naming names in fear of missing someone, you know who you are and we appreciate your commitment and effort.

Now, we look to our up coming Spring and Summer events with 3-D Archery, April 13th at R & B Archery, Black Creek, Spring Turkey Hunt, May 10 -12 . If you haven't signed up by now you are out of luck.

CTO Bowling at Clintonville Lanes, on the first Wed of every month, and several fishing events including: Shawano Lake Fishery June 1st, Green Bay Walleye Hunt, June 4th and the Lake Michigan, Salmon Fishing Event, July 1st. Hope to see you at these events!

By the way, for those that were into March Madness, Brackets ...Thanks Louisville!

2013 SHAWANO LAKE FISHERY SATURDAY JUNE 1, 2013

Many residents and fishermen know we are on Shawano Lake this one time each year. We make quite a presence at the park and boat landing. And—being there is what it’s all about. Outdoor folks sharing what we want most. Camaraderie and good will. In the past we’ve had various weather conditions. But we’ve never had a bad day. Sure we want to catch fish and we do. Folks sitting around enjoying a good meal and telling stories, mostly about fishing and the big one that got away is always a joy to hear. (By the way—it’s OK to tell tall tales on this day as long as it’s about fishing.)

Final plans as to place, etc have not been completed. Watch your mailbox in a couple weeks for a postcard with all the details.

There is a Registration Form on page 8 of this newsletter that must be completed and returned by May 25th so we can be sure of enough pontoon boats for all to fish. Try your best to be there before 8:oo a.m., have a sweet roll or donut & coffee,

Bait will be furnished. Call if you have questions

P.S. Don’t forget the Awards—be sure to have your big fish measured!

LAKE MICHIGAN SALMON FISHING EVENT

We are getting our boat captain’s boats signed up at both harbors. We will be fishing on Monday, July 1, at 4:30 a.m. at Two Rivers and 4:00 a.m. at Algoma. You should be there at least 10 minutes before, to make sure we are all boarded on time. I will send information to those that have not been on the boats and don’t know what to take and how to get there. Last year we had the best time, the King Salmon and Rainbow Trout were everywhere. We do share the fish! This way everyone gets some fish to have a delicious dinner. Last year no one had to share, they all got enough fish.

If you are interested in fishing in Lake Michigan for King Salmon and Rainbow Trout, please call me at 920-336-1934 or email me at palj22@att.net. You must be a disabled member of Challenge The Outdoors and up to date on your membership. This is a disabled person fishing event only. My name is Judy Paluch and Wayne Paluch is the person in charge of Two Rivers.

Our openings are limited to a first come basis. The latest you may sign up by is June 21. Sometimes there is a person or two that might drop out after this date; so we have a sign up list and I call to fill the openings. Our captains and their first mates are our helpers. If you can’t drive to get to the har- bor, you may bring along only one helper to drive you, but they will not be fishing and have to sign up too. Both of you need a fishing license and Lake Michigan Salmon stamp, No one can go out on

the boat without a license and stamp: even if you are not fishing. You also will have to be signed up ahead in order to participate. I have to assign people to boats depending on how much room I have. The captains tell me how many people they can handle, and I fill the boats that way. Don’t just show up.

In case I am not home, leave your phone number clearly and your name on my answering machine; mention that you are interested in Lake Michigan Fishing Event. I will call you back as soon as I can. Make sure that you talk to me before you plan on fishing. Speak clearly so I know who to call. We have Two Rivers and Algoma harbors and the spaces fill up quite fast. I will keep a waiting list, but best to get your name in early. It is a great day!

Green Bay Blizzard Game Recap

On Saturday evening, March 23, 35 CTO members attended the Indoor Arena Football Game be- tween the Green Bay Blizzard vs. the Chicago Slaughter. The game was hard hitting and close throughout the 1st half, with the Blizzard missing a couple close opportunities to score. At halftime, the Blizzard trailed 9-6. The 2nd half of the game brought on a few mistakes by the Blizzard and the Chicago team was able to take advantage of those mistakes. The blizzard tried hard to keep the game close, but was unable to come away with a win. The Blizzard lost 27-14. Overall the members of CTO seen a very energetic crowd and were able to have a great time sharing their experience with their families and friends. A win would have been great, but the time spent together is the greatest win of all.

CTO Equipment Inventory Update

If anyone has equipment belonging to Challenge The Outdoors, fishing poles, shooting rigs, tents, crossbows …. I would like to update our inventory, so please contact Cliff Pheifer at 715 412 1707 or email deb57ncliff55@gmail.com

CTO Bowling & Card Party

The first monthly CTO Bowling & Card Party took place Wednesday, February 6th at the Clinton- ville Lanes. There were only six members that attended, with five of us bowling up to three games. We all used the ramps that were recently purchased by CTO and we really had a great time. After the second game, we took a short lunch break. Wednesday is Dollar Day at Clintonville Lanes so you can get a great tasting burger, fries and soda for just three dollars.

CTO will be holding this event for the next several months on the first Wednesday of every month from noon until 4 pm. This event is open to ALL CTO members and you can choose to bowl up to three games, that will be paid for by CTO, or you can also play cards like cribbage or sheepshead. It’s a great opportunity to get together with fellow members, so come out and have some fun. Next event will be Wednesday, March 6th at noon. Hope to see you all there. If you need more info con- tact Steve Kettenhoven at steve.kettenhoven@gmail.com or 715-250-0077.

DISABLED KIDS FISHERY & PICINIC

CTO has been working with Seymour High School and their physically challenged group of kids to provide a fishing outing and picnic for disabled kids in the Seymour area for the past 9 years. For many of the kids this will be the only opportunity they will have to fish the whole year. This year we decided to give the pond at Memorial Park in Appleton a try again as it is a great fit for all our and the kids wants and needs. We will be setting up camp at the pavilion about 9 a.m. Our vol- unteers and mentors will have poles rigged and ready with bait & tackle waiting too. The kids and their helpers/teachers will arrive about 9:30 a.m.

At noon our fine group of volunteers will provide a great cookout consisting of hot dogs, brats, chips, and all the fixings. After lunch the kids will have more opportunities to fish and or enjoy the Universal Playground. This yearly event has been a great way for CTO to give back to the commu- nity and show/teach the kids that just because one has a physical challenge in life you can still par- ticipate and enjoy our great outdoors! We THANK Jan Vanden Heuvel for her continued support of this event. That makes us all smile a little wider knowing others appreciate our mission and all our efforts on this day.

The date has not been set as of yet but we usually wind-up having the event in late May on a weekday. We are hoping for another great event and to make it happen CTO will be in need of volunteers to help mentor the kids, supply fishing equipment and to cook and serve food. If you are interested please contact Mark Baehr @ (920) 766-9218 or email him @ baehrm@sbcglobal.net You’ll be HAPPY you did and so will the kids!!

Pictures! Nominations! Stories!

Your award committee wants to reward you for doing what you enjoy. So if you are planning some fishing, hunting or sporting clays. Please turn in your picture and details about the fish, animal or your score. Don’t forget to tell us about your experiences for the Deepdodo award, or inspirational story. Let’s not forget about the volunteers. Tell us what the volunteers do that help out the organi- zation. Don’t know if they are able bodied or disabled? That’s fine; we can figure that out for you. Please email the information to Cindy Mateer at mateercc@centurytel.net.
